On The Road Again Should the Hoke County Board of Education choose a new superintendent from applicants presently working in the county school system, or should the board go out side the district to fill the vacancy? Mattk Locklear "Stay within the school district as they are more capable. They would know more about the schools. " Timmy McVicker "They should stay within the school system. A person within the system knows more about how the local school is run. " Ralph Stewart, Jr. . "Who have they got to choose from in Hoke County?" (not pictured) Barbara Smith "I think that not so much em phasis should be put on whether the person is from in or out of the Hoke County School System. I think it should be on who is the most qualified of all the applicants. " Jeff Fellows "Stay inside the school system. If they pick somebody out of nowhere they won't know the system, if they pick somebody from inside they'll know how the system is run. " Around Town (Continued from page 1) had a chance to win a seat in the House so maybe he can work a miracle with the finances of the state. Anyway best of luck to him! I stated above that it was foggy Monday morning and since I had to make a trip to Monroe during the morning hours it was really bad driving. One thing that made it so bad was that about 50V? of the drivers on the highway didn't have any lights on their cars. This makes it dangerous for all other drivers on the highway. Then there are many drivers that seem to be in a hurry during this foggy weather. They will pass you and can't see SO feet in front on the road. When people are driving without lights and these fast drivers are passing at the same time, it is leading up to an accident. The roads would be much safer if all drivers would use a little common sense. ? ? ? Every day as you read the daily papers it seems that someone else is getting ready to run for governor of the state. It is over a year until the primary and if the running starts now think of the amount of money it will cost the candidates. It seems that each year the price of holding office goes up. Maybe if people would stop contributing to campaigns, many candidates would drop out. ? ? ? Even though the unemployment rate in Hoke County is more than we would like to see it, it could be in worse condition. We have always had what you would call a high unemployment rate compared to many other counties of the state. Just think what it would be if the four major industries in Hoke County, namely, Burlington, Faberge, Tex-Elastic and House of Raeford, had been laying off workers like the rest of the coun try. We are fortunate to have these industries here and the employ ment they are supplying our peo ple. These products are selling and are keeping our people at work. ?a Say You Saw ft . Fayetteville's Channel 40 and Showtime for the bask monthly charge. The rate hike will require two readings and will be aired again at the February council meeting. Annexation Mulled A request Monday night from residents in the Shawtown area of the county for Raeford sewer ser vice might have opened the door for the 42 families living there to come into the corporate limits. Residents living in the area would probably like to be annexed into the city, a spokesman for the Shawtown group said. Residents have petitioned the council to provide sewer service and have offered to buy the pipe needed to connect the dwellings. Council members voted to have Matthews look into the cost of engineering foe the sewer service and the feasibility of annexing the area. Bike Rack Approved In still further business the coun cil approved the construction of a bicycle rack at the corner of El wood Avenue and Main Street. The rack will cost the city $130, and it is believed that it will keep bicycles from blocking sidewalks in the area. Squad Reports The budget for the Hoke County Rescue Squad is tight, and the city's annual $4,000 contribution is essential to the units continued operation, council members were told. Last year the squad took in about $19,400 and spent almost $18,400, spokesman Johnny Melton said. A "Without the city's help we couldn't make it," Melton said. Melton noted in the squad's an nual report to the city that during 1982, members put in more than 1,223 hours of service and traveled almost 7,300 miles. The rescue squad made 360 calls to traffic accidents and attended to 117 injured persons during the year. Melton said. Other Matters In other business, the council took action on these matters: ?Approved the installation of a street light at the corner of Central Avenue and Racket Alley. ?Voted to extend a bond an ticipation note of $58,000 until April 13. ?OK'd a measure which would bring the city's Privilege Licenses in line with state requirements. The move could mean higher fees for some city businesses. ?Requested that Mayor John K. McNeill write the state Department of Transportation and ask for a speed limit reduction to 35 M.P.H. on U.S. 401 Bypass. ?Reappointed present members to the Fireman's Relief Fund Board of Trustees. Girl Hurt In Accident A 15-year-old girl was injured at about 5:20 p.m. January 5 when she walked into the right side of a pickup truck on U.S. 401 south near College Drive, State Highway Patrol Trooper Ken Weston said. Jill Schuchard of Rt. 1, Aber deen, was admitted to Moore Memorial Hospital in Pinehurst, Weston said. The officer said she suffered fractures of the jaw, nose and some fingers. She was struck by a large mirror on the vehicle. Miss Schuchard was the second person to be injured in a traffic ac cident in that area in the past several months. He said the truck was being driven northeast on U.S. 401 by a Red Springs man when the acci dent happened and that the driver was not charged. Weston said he was informed the girl had been at Hoke County High School taking a driver education course and was walking to a place where she was to be given a ride home when the acci dent occurred.
