Sunday School Lesion
Background Scripture: Luke IS.
Devotional Reading: Luke 15:4-7.
Few of Jesus' parables are as
well-known and popular as the
story of the Prodigal Son. Yet,
despite that fact, there is a part of
this story that is frequently passed
by without due attention. For
many people, the story seems to
end when the celebration com
menced: "And they began to make
merry."
If you are the "prodigal" type,
then that may be far enough for
you-it is wonderful to know that
God's love is like that of the father
who forgave his son and welcomed
him back into the family circle
with great celebration. Lots of us,
however, are more like the
character in the parable who
doesn't even enter the scene until
after the celebration has begun.
As Luke begins the story, we are
told that "There was a man who
had two sons." Although most of
the narrative is devoted to the
younger son, the Prodigal, we
must remember the other son, the
Prodigal's brother-for many of us
often share something in common
with him.
i
The brother of the Prodigal was
not at all like his younger sibling.
He was hardworking, steady,
dependable, and apparently had
no great compulsion to sow the
wild oats that so intrigued his
brother. Apparently, he did all the
right things, just as his younger
brother had done all the wrong
things.
Yet, although he had apparently
done all the right things, he had
done them for the wrong reasons:
"Lo, these many years I have serv
ed you, and I never disobeyed your
command; yet you never gave me a
kid that I might make merry with
my friends." He had played the
part of the "good son," but ap
parently not because he wanted to
serve his father, but because he
wanted something in return. He
begrudged the celebration thrown
for his brother because he felt that
the Prodigal was getting what
rightly belonged to him.
In other words, the older
brother believed that his good ser
vice had earned what the father
was giving to his undeserving
younger brother. He thought that
his service to his father placed him
above his brother. In fact, his
disregard for the Prodigal is evi
dent when the elder brother speaks
of him, not as "my brother," but
as "this son of yours."
We may come to God complain
ing about the good fortune of
"this son of yours," until he
reminds us that the Prodigal is also
"your brother."

Missing Persons, Part IV
After a permanent receiver has
been appointed to take custody
and control of a missing person's
property, he has many duties that
he must perform.
Obviously, he should pay any
debts which are owed by the miss
ing person, and collect debts that
are due to him.
In addition, the permanent
receiver may continue the missing
person's business or farming
operations if he has the approval
of the judge. He may also sell,
lease, mortgage or partition the
missing person's property with the
approval of the judge.
Perhaps the most pressing duty
of the permanent receiver is to use
the property of the missing person
to support and maintain his wife
and children, who are his
dependents.
He may maintain the dependents
by applying proceeds of loans and
sales of any property or any in
come from the property for their
support.
If the income is not enough to
support them, he may apply to the
judge for an order to sell or mort
gage so much of the real or per
sonal property as may be
necessary.
Another thing that the perma
nent reciever must do is to make a
search for the absentee person.
The judge should order this search,
and his order will prescribe any
methods of search deemed ad
visable by him.
At a minimum, the search must
include an inquiry at the person's
home, his last known residence,
the place where he was last known
to have been, and other places
where information would likely be
obtained or where he may have
gone.
Inquiry must also be made of
relatives, friends, and associates of
his or other people who would be
likely to hear from him.
Notice must be put in one or
more appropriate papers,
periodicals, or other news media
requesting information about him.
in addition, notification must be
given to local, state, and national
offices which would be most likely
to know or learn of his
whereabouts.
