Burlington Industries has com pleted a new $1.5 million coal-fired boiler at Raeford. Testing began Wednesday, December 15, and the boiler will be fully operational soon. According to Charles Cook, Burlington Menswear divisional engineer, the coal-fired boiler will replace existing oil/gas boilers, which will be kept on standby. Cook said the new boiler is highly efficient and will reduce energy costs approximately 70 percent each year by using a cheaper domestic fuel instead of imported oil. The coal-fired boiler features the latest in environmental controls and has been fully approved for operation by state and federal en vironmental agencies. The new boiler will have another economic impact, also. Its daily consumption of 15 to 20 tons of coal will be delivered by the Aber deen and Rockfish Railroad, using a siding built to serve the plant when it opened, but unused for eight years. In order to maximize efficiency, the new boiler will operate around the clock according to Plant Manager Bill Archer. jgsm 25- YEARS SERVICE - Dorothy L.
