Hoke Highlights

Exams were held on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday of this
week for all students in grades six
through 12.
Students were given Thursday
and Friday as vacation days.
Teachers will report these days
to prepare for release of report
cards on Tuesday.
These are the last exams that
seniors will have to take.
Cheers!
If seniors are failing however,
they are required to take the final
exams if they can possibly pass for

Carla Myers
Carla June Myers of Raeford
has been awarded a Peace College
Honors Scholarship for the
1983-84 academic year.
Honors scholarships are among
'? the most select awards at Peace,
going only to students in the top
10V# of their high school classes.
Honors scholars must also have
excellent grades and SAT scores,
show involvement in extra
curricular activities and a promise
the year.
On Thursday at 7 p.m. a finan
cial workshop will be held to
discuss scholarships with eligible
seniors at the high school.
Senior officers will help set up
before the workshop.
Mrs. JoAn Moses has organized
this workshop to cover materials
which school does not provide time
to discuss.
All eligible students are urged to
attend.
The Miss Ekoh pageant is not
far away.
It will be held on Thursday,
February 24.
This pageant is sponsored by the
Hoke High Yearbook Staff.
The competititon will include a
formal dress competition, and a
leisure wear competition.
Interviews will be given to each
contestant by the judges.
The winner will receive the title
of Miss Ekoh and will appear in
the Hoke High annual.
Good luck to all brave con
testants.

of future usefulness to society.
Potential Honors scholars must
also come to the Peace campus for
a day of interviews with college
faculty and administrative staff
members.
Carla is the daughter of Mrs.
Kay Myers of 304 S. Bethel Rd.
and Mr. Stuart Myers. She is a
senior at Hoke County High
School.
In high school Carla has been
active in the Monggram Club, the
French Club, Chorus and March
ing Band. She is a member of the
National Honor Society, a Mar
shal and a cheerleader.
Carla is also in the Society of
Distinguished American High
School Students and Who's Who
Among American High School
Students. She was a U.S. National
Business Education Award Win
ner.

Great Decisions Class Starts Here Feb. 8
The Great Decisions course for
1983 will be taught in Hoke Coun
ty February 8-March 29. The
classes will be held on Tuesday
afternoons from 3-5:30 p.m. at the
Board of Education Building.
Glenn Langdon will be teaching
the course, which is sponsored by
the Sandhills Community College
Division of Continuing Education.
The Great Decisions course
focuses on eight timely discussion
topics in foreign relations. Class
members may participate in discus
sions, listen to special speakers and
use a book designed for the course.
The course is nationally spon
sored by the Foreign Policy
Association.
This year's topics include: "US
-- Soviet Relations"; "Lebanon";
"Trade and Unemployment";
"Africa's Economic Squeeze";
"Nuclear Proliferation";
"Southeast Asia"; "Inter
Notary Education Offered Feb. 1
A course in Notary Public
Education will be offered by Sand
hills Commumnity College at the
Hoke County Public Library in
Raeford.
The course, taught by SCC staff
member Inza Aberaathy, will meet
Tuesday and'' Wednesday,
February 1 and 2 from 7-9 p.m.
The course is required for all
persons who are preparing for cer- I
tification as a notary public for the
first time.
Tuition for the continuing
education course is S8, or free for
persons 65 years old or older.
Registration will be held at the
first class meeting.
J. Parker Named To Who's Who
Joni Bennett Parker, a senior at
Meredith College and the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Black
Parker of Route 4, Fayetteville,
has recently been elected to Who's
Who Among Students in American
Universities and Colleges.
Thirty students from a senior
class of over 300 were named to the
Who's Who List at Meredith.
Students are nominated for
Who's Who honors on the basis of
scholarship ability, participation
and leadership in academic and ex
tracurricular activities, citizenship,
service to Meredith, and potential
for future achievement.
Nominations were made by
faculty members from a list of
eligible students. A student was
considered eligible if she had com
pleted 90 semester hours and had
at least a 2.5 quality point ratio.
Meredith, founded in 1891 by
North Carolina Baptists, is the
largest Baptist-related, four-year
liberal arts college for women in
the southeastern United States.
McCrea, Snapp Honored At FSU
Andrea McCrae and Gary Snapp,
both of Raeford, were among 262
students who have been named to
the Dean's List at Fayetteville
State University for the fall
semester.
G. Johnson Attends NCSU Orientation
Hoke High's Greta S. Johnson
was among 200 high school seniors
participating in the fourth annual
minority Visitation Day at North
Carolina State University January
15.
Greta is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Roosevelt Johnson of 53 East
6th Ave. in Raeford.
The day-long orientation, spon
sored by NCSU's Office of Admis
sions, was organized by Rhonda
Whitten Huffman, an admissions
counselor at the university.
Huffman said that the program
is part of an ongoing effort to in
troduce the state's black high
school students to the academic
opportunities and facilities offered
by NCSU.
The day's events included a
welcome by Chancellor Bruce R.
Poulton, a presentation by black
faculty members, a financial aid
presentation, tours of campus
facilities, presentations by students
enrolled at NCS0, and a perfor
mance by the New Horizons
Choir.
Some participants also stayed
for the NCSU-Georgia Tech
basketball game that afternoon.
Raeford Man To Serve On USS New Jersey
Navy Fire Control Technician
2nd Class Thomas P. Garrison, son
of Hestel E. Garrison of 501 E.
Prospect Ave., Raeford, is a mem
ber of the battleship USS New
Jersey, homeported in Long Beach,
California.
The New Jersey, the first of the
four "Iowa" Class battleships to
reenter active service, was recently
re com missioned at the Long Beach
Naval Shipyard.

dent Reagan as the primary speak
er.
The battleship was originally
commissioned in May 1943 for use
in WWII. Following the war, the
massive ship was decommissioned
and "mothballed" until it was
reactivated for use during the
Korean and Vietnam conflict.
Plans for reactivation of the New
Jersey began in 1981 and were
followed by an extensive overhaul
period. Advanced radar and com
munications systems were installed,
and "Harpoon" and "Tomahawk"
missiles were added to the ship's
arsenal, which includes nine 16
inch guns and 20 5-inch guns.
The New Jersey is 887 feet long
and carries a crew of approximately
70 officers and 1,600 enlisted
members. It is capable of carrying
helicopters and "Harrier" vertical
take-off aircraft.

and carries continuing education
credit (CEU). \
The tuition for the course is
$8.00 or free for persons 65 years
old or older.

Posey Graduates
Airman Bobby L. Posey Jr., son
of Mr. and Mrs Bobby L. Posey
of Route 2, Raeford, has
graduated from the U.S. Aii Force
air traffic controller course at
Keesler Air Force Base, Miss
Graduates of the 16-week course
learned procedures to regular air
traffic and direct aircraft to radar
controlled landings and passed the
Federal Aviation Administration
Certification examination, ihey
also earned credits toward an
associate degree in applied science
through the Community College of *
the Air Force.
