HEART MONTH - Raeford Mayor Pro Tem Graham Clark is shown signing a proclamation Monday
designating February as Heart Month in Raeford. Marilyn Semones, shown with him, is Radford city chairman
for the fund-raising campaign.
Raeford Mayor Proclaims
February Heart Month
Mayor John K. McNeill Jr.
issued a proclamation today
designating February as Heart
Month and urged Raeford area
residents to support the 1983 cam
paign of the Hoke County Heart
Association.
In the proclamation, McNeill
asked for support from the
residents of Raeford in the cam
paign against the nation's Number
One Killes, heart disease and
stroke.
"These diseases accounted for
more than 24,000 of deaths in
North Carolina last year,"
McNeill said, "or 49% of deaths
from all other causes."
"The American Heart Associa
tion urgently needs money to sup
port research so that medicine can
have a better understanding of the
basic causes of heart attack, stroke
and hypertension," he added.
The contributions also support
professional and public education,
and community service projects.
Volunteers in Raeford will join
the effort to distribute Heart
Association information and col
lect contributions, he said.
The text of Mayor McNeill's
proclamation reads:
"Whereas, heart disease and
stroke this year will kill nearly one
million Americans, a total which
exceeds all other causes combined,
and
"Whereas, more than 200,000
of these victims die before retire
ment age, and
"Whereas, the American Heart
Association is the only voluntary
health agency whose sole mission is
to reduce early death and disability
from heart disease and stroke, and
"Whereas, the Heart Associa
tion's relentless battle against this
American epidemic combined a
nationwide research program, as
well as improving health care in the
community through professional
and public education, and com
munity service programs.
"Now, therefore, I Mayor John
K. McNeill Jr., proclaim the
month of February as American
Heart Month and urge all citizens
to support the educational and
fund raising campaign of the Hoke
County Heart Association. Con
tributions of time and money will
help in the fight against heart
disease and stroke."
