Hoke Cagers Win 3
Hoke High's three basketball
teams won their contests Friday
over the E.E. Smith squads at the
Hoke gym. Hoke played Lumber
ton at Lumberton Tuesday and
will play Terry Sanford at Terry
Sanford Friday.
The Hoke girls' 45-37 victory
ended a three-game losing streak
and put the season's mark at 8-4.
The varsity boys won 56-48,
behind Greg Hollingsworth's 20
point scoring performance, bring
ing their season's mark to 10-4.
The Junior Varsity won 49-41
with Southerland and McRae high
for the winners with 12 points each
and Council for the losers with 29.
Buckettes
Lose To L
In the Buckettes first game of
the week, they played a very tough
East Lee and finally prevailed by
winning 48 to 44.
A good team effort proved too
much for the Yellow Jackets.
Vernanda Southerland scored 22
points and grabbed 16 rebounds to
lead the Buckettes.
Icesonnia Horsley scored 14
points and grabbed 15 rebounds
for the runner-up scorer.
Teresa Dudley grabbed 7 re
bounds and scored 4 points.
In their second game of the
week, the Buckettes looked tired
after their hard fought victory over
East Lee but they finally outlasted
a determined Reid Ross 37-29.
This win brought their record to
12 and 1 for the season.

Hoke Runners Place In Race
Members of the Hoke County
1EA Road Runners garnered
several awards in the Snowman
Run Road Races held Saturday in
Columbia, South Carolina.
The races consisted of a two mile
and a five mile race. The races
were sponsored by Caughman
Road Park and the South Carolina
Governor's Council on Physical
Fitness.
In the five mile race the Road
Runners had four runners entered.
All four were running in the 14 and
under age divjpion. Don Woods
won second place in this division
and placed 39th overall.
Allen R. Jacobs won third in his
age division and placed 51st
overall. Also competing in the five
mile race for the Road Runners
was Robert Lambert, who finished
52nd overall, and Robert Jacobs
who finished 74th overall.
There were 172 registered run
ners in the 5 mile race.
In the two mile race, the Road
runners had 9 runners entered to
compete with the 92 other runners
registered for the race.
Garry McMillan placed first
overall in a time of 1 1 :23 while his
twin brother Larry was three
seconds behind to take second
place.
The other 1EA runners and their
place of finish were as follows:
Ronnie E. Locklear, sixth; Keith
Locklear, eighth; Ivory Henderson
Jr., ninth; Henry McMillan, 14th;
Robert Locklear, 15th; Willie D.
Woods, 26th; and Anthony E.
James, 27th.
The Road Runners will compete
again this weekend in Clinton.

Horsley, McKinnon Named Week 's Top Athletes
Orlando McKinnon and Iceson
nia Horsely have been named as
Male and Female Athletes of the
Week for the week of January
24-28 by the Hoke High coaching
staff. The honor is a repeat for
both athletes this year.
McKinnon. a 165 pound junior
member of the Buck Wrestling
team was named Male Athlete of
the Week for his performances in
last week's victories over Pinecrest
and E.E. Smith.
In the Pinecrest match, which
Hoke won 35-22. Orlando scored a
superior decision over his oppo
nent.
In the 47-27 victory over h.t.
Smith, Orlando pinned his oppo
nent in 5 minutes and 35 seconds
of the match Orlando is now 1 1-6
for the season and 3-2 in con
ference matches.

Hoke Wrestlers
Take Two
The Hoke High wrestling team
ran its conference record to tour
wins and one loss with two vie
lories last week against conference
opponents Pinecrest and f-.K
Smith.
On Thursday night. Hoke
defeated Pinecrest by a score of
35-22. The match was a very tough
one for the Bucks, and the out
come was not decided until the
cond to last match.

lightweights built up a lead foi the
Bucks, the middleweights produc
ed no points, and the match was
decided by the victories in the
heavyweight divisions.
In the 100 pound division, Billy
Locklear ran his season record to
11-3 by pinning his opponent.
Kevin Locklear then wrestled to a
draw in the 107 pound division.
Aftei a Hoke loss hi the 114
pound weight class, Don Woods,
ai 121 pounds, and Mai v in Pe
quese, at 128 pounds, scored deci
sions over theii opponents to make
the score 14-8 in Hoke's favor.
Hoke's score would remain at 14
as Pinecrest amassed 14 straight
points in the middleweight divi
sions to carry the score to 22-14

sion; Darrell Kelly, at 187 pounds,

on Friday night, the Buck's had a
much easier time as they captuied
a 47-27 victory

have, with Hoke building an early
lead in the lightweight divisions.
