Retired - Associate Editor Bill Lindau has retired from The News- Journal after four years. Bill says he *s going
to relax, feed his animals and work on a novel for a while at his Southern Pines home. Bill was recently honored
by the staff of the newspaper with a small party. Not out of tradition, but because he never knows what time it
is, Bill was given a watch.

? The following letter was written
f to Bill Lindau and a copy was
mailed to me.
Mr. Bill Lindau:
On behalf of the residents and
staff of Sandhills Youth Center,
we are extending our appreciation
to you for having supported us by
rendering transportation services
.. as well as being there when we
needed to have pictures taken for
r newspaper articles.
We consider you a lifelong
friend and wish you every hap
piness in your retirement. Just
* think, now you can do all those
, things you have always wanted to
do, become a community
b volunteer.
Sincerely,
J. P. Smith
Program Director
* This is just one of the letters that
& has been written to or about Bill
j since his retirement. He deserves
every bit of praise that anyone can
bestow upon him.
He started to work for The
News-Journal on November 15,
1978 and worked his last day, Fri
day, February 4, 1983. In these
four and a half years working for
the paper. Bill made many friends
with his smile and willingness to go
out and take pictures and write
articles at times most folks would
have considered "beyond the call
of duty."
I have never met a man that lov
ed animals as much as Bill Lindau
and his compassion for taking care
of them or trying to find them a
home was tops.
He never had an unkind word
for anyone and he seemed to
always find the good in his
fellowmen. He turned out his work
without complaining about the
amount or the lack of help.
I have enjoyed my association
with him over these years and I
know that he made my job easier
with his working with the public. 1
hope the best for him in his retire
ment and 1 will always consider him
my friend.

The letter last week from Linda
Dow of Greenville, S.C. asking
help in locating the daughter of
Ruth Matheson brought a quick
response into the office.
Linda Dow is the wife of the late
Albert Dow, who ran a restaurant
on Main Street for many years
before and during World War II.
They first lived in a house on
Stewart Street beside the old B.R.
Gatlin home. They later moved to
the home on North Main Street
now occupied by Mrs. Lee
O'Briant. Mrs. Dow should be ap
proximately 80 years old at this
time.
Ruth Matheson was the wife of
Jim Warner of the Blue Springs
section of the county and her
daughter was Ruth Warner, now
Mrs. Charles Riddle of Greenville,
S.C.
Most of the oldtimers of
Raeford will remember the Dows
and the 35c steaks at his cafe. The
cafe was located where Western
Auto is now situated.
If you would like more informa
tion contact Robert Gatlin.

Several weeks ago. I mentioned a
shortage of calendars in this
column. A couple of nights after
the paper hit the street a knock
came on my door. Dale Teal of the
Hoke Auto Co. gave my wife two -
calendars for our use. Thanks
Dale.
