The students were studying the newspaper as part of Newspaper in Education Week. W. Hoke Students i Study Newspaper Warren Johnston, news editor of The News-Journal, visited Ethelyn Baker's (assistant-Joanne Bease.) classroom during Newspaper in Education Week and related some of his experiences as a news person. The editor, who has been a journalist for five years, talked to the third graders about the educa tional requirements needed to be 0 come a successful journalist. He also explained the long hours involved in gathering information and putting a story together. "Although a lot of work is involved", Johnston said, "the results are rewarding and satisfy ing. The feeling of accomplishment makes me happy; especially when I break a story." He then proceeded to explain to the students the 9 meaning of "breaking" a story. According to the news editor, a journalist should be one of the most informed persons in town because he/she must be aware of what's going on; therefore does a tremen dous amount of reading. The questions the students asked indicated that this visitor had definitely aroused their interest in reading the newspaper, and it p appears that this renewed interest will continue throughout their lives.
