The **Raa for Hope" was spon sored by the Cayce- West Columbia Jaycees to tame money for Camp Hope, a Jaycee sponsored summer aip for aiaiMjr aad physically la the 2 aie race the Road Run ?ors swept the awards in the 13 and under act division taking 1st, and 3rd places. Marty LocUcar placed first in ibis age division running the two mile course in a time of 12:28 and placing 15ti? overall in a Ud of 118 runners. Robert Jacobs placed 2nd in 1239 and finished 16th overall. Third place was captured by Ivory Henderson in a time of 12:47 *nd he finished 18th overall. Also competing in the 2 miw race for the Road Runners was Fish Fry Funds Help Shnaer's Hospitals for Crippled Children began in 1922. They ptwick outstanding care to duMren who hare orthopedic pro bletns or who have been severely bunted. Both iapatimt and outpa tient care are given to children from infancy to the 18th birthday regard less of race, religion, or relation ship to a Shriner. There is no charge for any of the care or services provided by a Shrine Hosptial. Admission is bas ed on medical and financial need. All services are paid by the Shriners. ? The funds to finance medical care are supported by gifts and btqt Hi of Shriner*. their families and the general pub be phis fund raising events snch as a Shriner Fish Fry. Circus, East-West Shrine Bowl Game, and paper sales. There are now 21 Hospitals - 18 of which are Orthopedic Units and 3 Burn Institutes. These Units are engaged in teaching and research programs in addition to patient care. The Units are located through out Continental United States and Mexico City. Montreal and Hono lulu. As of 1981. the Shriners Hospi tals had cured or substantially helped more than 249.68b children . The first Orthopedic Hospital opened in Shrrveport. Louisiana, in 1922. In 1961. between the months of January and December. 13.802 new applications were handled by the 21 Hospitals. The first Burns Institute was opened in Galveston. Texas, in 1966. The average length of stay for acute burns patients for January through December. 1981. was 32 days. The average length of stay for the 18 Orthopedic Units was for 26 days. Since Shrincrs Hospitals were established, over S582.098.355 has been spent by Shrincrs for operat ing all 21 Hospitals. The Shrine has spent over $104,876,074 in con struction costs. The 1982 operating budget for the Hospitals ran in excess of $81,046,000. When a Shriner approaches you with a fish fry ticket or some other item for sale, please keep these children in mind. When you give a SI bill to the Shrincrs Hospitals, remember that 98.2% of it goes for cure: the remainder for administra tion. Debatables Top Headliners The Women's Volleyball League ended its regular season Monday. 28 February, 1983. The first game of the night was btfun the Debatabies and the Headliners. The Debatabies won the match 15-13, 15-4, and were led by Mary Adams and Sue Davis. Pam Frederick and Sandra Wig gins led the Headliners. In another match it was the Potntsetters versus the wild Cats. Charlotte V'dencia and Brenda McPhatter guided the Pointsetters to a 15-7, 15-5 win. The Wild Cats were led by Carolyn Headen and Ralene McCall. The Diamond Powder Puffs and DAT Construction played a dose match. DAT Construction, rally ing behind the serves of Ella Ran som and Debbie Thompson, won the match 15-4, 10-15, 15-8. The Diamond Puffs were led by Dianne Stec and Becky Baker. In another match it was the Spikes going up against Jerry's Auto Repair. Led by Hazel McLaughlin and Geraldine EDerbee, the Spikes won the match 15-0, Forfeit, 15-11. Jerry's Auto Repair was guided by Janelle Thompkins and Vicky McMillan. The closest match of the night was a battle between the Wild Cats and the Headliners. The match went to three games and when it was over, the Wild Cats had won 15-12, 16-18, 15-11. The Wildcats were led by Carolyn Headen and Peggy Walters. Nena Leggett and Carolyn Monroe guided the Headliners. In another match it was the Debatabies versus the Sneakers. The Debatabies, led by Dodi Williams and Mary James, won the match 15-11. 15-11. In the 10K (6.2 miles) race, the Rood Runners also swept the awards in the 13 and vmtrr age division. Winning 1st for the Road Run ners was Robert Lambert, who set * new personal record of 37:24 to finish 12th overall in a field of 148 runners. Robert, age 13. has now competed in 6 races as a member of the Road Runners and has plac ed in to top four in all six races in his age group. He has four 1st pfatce finishes, one 2nd place finish, and one fourth place finish. Placing second in the 13 and under division was Allen R. Jacobs in a time of 40:12. Ronnie E. Locklear placed 3rd with a time of 40:16. The Road Runners will compete in Florence, S.C. this weekend in the Diet Pepsi Road Race. J GETS HELP? Tuesday H'ittig of Radford has been scheduled to go to the SMrvters' Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville, South Carolina, on February 28. She is being held by Melvin Engram of Red Springs who is President of Mecca Shrine Ctub in Radford. Also pictured is John T. Fur mage who is Tuesday's sponsor through Mecca Shrine Club.
