Concord Miss Represents
N.C. In Washington Festival
Miss Shelly Gay Hefner, daugh
ter of The Honorable and Mrs.
William A. Hefner (8ih District
N.C.) of Concord has been chosen
by the North Carolina Society of
Washington to represent the state
as Cherry Blossom Princess in the
Annual Cherry Blossom Festival in
Washington. D.C.
Sponsored by the National Con
ference of State Societies, the
Festival will be held during the
week of April 3-9. This celebration
dates from a gift of friendship of
hundreds of cherry blossom trees
given by Japan to the United States
during the administration of Presi
dent William Howard Tatt.
Miss Hefner was born in Char
lotte. North Carolina, and at age
four moved to Cabarrus County
where she attended Cabarrus
County Elementary schools. In
1974 she moved to Fairfax County.
Virginia, to finish at Langley High
School in 1980. During her high
school career. Shelly participated
in the Congressional Club's Annual
First Lady's Breakfast and in l?^
she was a member of the North
Carolina Che try Blossom Court.
Shelly returned to North Carolina
for her freshman war at UNC- Wil
mington. w here she chose to major
in Biology . She then transferred to
Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer for
her sophomore year, continuing her
biology degree. While at Pfeitfer
Shelly was a volunteer at a local
children's home and also worked
parttime at Cabarrus Memorial
Hospital. Shelly then interrupted
college for one war hoping to
assure her thoughts about biology
by working in the medical field.
After working in a dental office tor
nine months, she now plans to
finish college with a major in
Biology, focusing on medical
sciences. While not ai work or
studying, one might find her busv
at her favorite activities such as
horseback nding. listening to niu
sic or dancing
Miss Hefner will he crowned
North Carolina's princess at a
Coronation Ball on Saturday.

Highlighting Japan's gift to
America of the cherry blossom
trees. Mr. Ka/uo Ishii. Representa
tive in charge. Japan Tobacco and
Salt Public Corporation will be the
special guest of North Carolina's
Coronation Ceremonies. Mr. Ishii
currently resides in Raleigh.
Miss Hefner will join with Prin
cesses from 54 State Societies
(Guam and Puerto Rico included)
in a number of activities during the
'1st Annual National Cherry Blos
som Festival. Highlights of the
week include a reception at the
Japanese Embassy, a Congressional
reception which Congressman
Hefner will escort his daughter,
luncheons, a parade and several
tours. A Cornonation Ball will be
held on Saturday. April 9 at the
Washington Convention Center.

one of the Princesses will be chosen
National Cherry Blossom Queen.
Cannon Mills of Kannapolis will
pro\ idc embroidered finger tip
towels as favors for each of the
Princesses.
Gordon M. Thomas of Pilot
Mountain and Arlington. Virginia

Carolina Society of Washington.
This year's General Chairmen of the
North Carolina Cherry Blossom
Festival will be Dr. and Mrs.
Harold R. Denton of Rivky Mount
and Rockville. Maryland.

Merer Meeting
The Raeford Friendship Club
met Tuesday, March 1. at the
United Methodist Church at 2:30
p.m.
Mrs. Cleva Newton led the devo
tional service and Leonard Miller
rendered the prayer.
Miss Isabel McFadyen read the
minutes of the last meeting and
gave the treasurer report.
During the business session a
copy of a letter to Representative
Bill Hefner was read and signed by
members.
Members were reminded of
"World Day of Prayer" at the
First Raeford Baptist Church
March 4. at 4:00 p.m.
Get well cards were signed and
sent to Mrs. Bennie Kelly, Mrs.
Bernice King, Mrs. Ruth
McEachern, Mrs. Maggie Meeks.
Mrs. Ethel Monroe, H.O.
Langdon, Jesse Gulledge, and
Clarence Rose. Sympathy cards
were signed and sent to Mrs.
Thelma McPhaul and Mrs. Mary
Ruth Haire.
One of the six quilts, quilled by
members February 8, was given to
a family who lost everything in a
recent fire.
Slides on safety were shown by
Miss Josephine Hall.
Home made pound cake and
fruit punch were served to twenty
seven members present.

Roeford Woman s Club
Gen Meeting March 1
The general meeting of the
NFWC, Raeford Woman's Club
met March 1 at the Hoke Civic
Center. Mrs. Jack Pope, president,
presided. Mrs. Robert McPhail led
the Club in the Pledge of
Allegiance and Club Collect,
followed by a devotional by Mrs.
Clayton Buoyer.
The following new officers were
elected: 1st Vice-president, Mrs.
Allen Edwards; 2d vice-president,
Mrs. George Shook; recording
secretary, Mrs. Robert McPhail,
and corresponding secretary, Mrs.
Julius Jordan.
The President thanked members
for their participation and
cooperation in numerous projects
accomplished by the Club. Miss
Caroline Parker encouraged
members to contact legislators
concerning laws on drunk drivers.
Mrs. Joyce McDiarmid asked for
volunteers to help with the exercise
program at the rest home. Plans
for a soup and sandwich lunch
March 21 were discussed. Marshall
Sullivan, representing Carolina
Telephone and Telegraph Com
pany, was the guest speaker. His
subject was "The Effect of
Deregulation on Customers." The
subject was most informaiive and
generated much discussion. The
Public Affairs Department hosted
a social following the program.

Thursday evening of last week.
A dessert course was served
before the game.
At the conclusion of play, prizes
were awarded to Mrs. Bobby Gib
son, high scorer, Mrs. Neill McFa
dyen, Jr., consolation, and Mrs.
June Johnson, bingo.
Mrs Morrison
Mrs. Charlie Morrison was
hostess to the members of her
bridge club and one visitor, Mrs.
George Crawford, last Thursday
evening.
A dessert course and coffee was
served upon arrival, snacks and
drinks during play.
Mrs. Bobby Wright was the reci
pient of the high score prize and
Mrs. Clyde Knott, the consolation
prize.
Ansley-Beacham Couple Wed
In Antioch
Miss Kathryn Rose Beacham,
daughter of Mrs. Robert M.
Beacham and the late R.M.
Beacham of Laurinburg and Peter
Calvin Ansley, son of the Rev. &
Mrs. Charles Coke Ansley of An
tioch Community, were united in
marriage on March 6 at 2:00 p.m.
in Antioch Presbyterian Church
with the Rev. Mr. Ansley of
ficiating.
J. Wesley Ward III, organist,
played the fourth movement of
"Beethoven's Ninth Symphony"
as a prelude. The bride was
escorted to the altar by her
brother, Robert M. Beacham Jr.
"Trumpet Voluntarire" was
played for the processional. She
wore an heirloom wedding gown
of candlelight organza and appli
qued lace. Seed pearls surrounded
the rounded neckline and puffed
sleeves. This gown was first worn
by Mrs. Hannie Hamphill Everette
on her wedding day, and later
given to Mrs. Clarence
Coughenour of Laurinburg. The
bride wore a string of pearls worn
by her mother on her wedding day,
and her headpiece was of baby's
breath and green leaves attached to
an ivory grosgrain ribbon. Her
bouquet consisted of two long
stemmed silk American Beauty
roses and ivory sweetpeas tied with
an ivory ribbon.
The maid of honor was Miss Joy
Lynn Davis of Laurinburg. Her
rose crochet-look gown featured a
square neckline with a fitted
bodice and short, puffed sleeves.
She wore a wreath headpiece of
pink and rose flowers and carried
one long-stemmed American Beau
ty rose tied with a rose ribbon.
John Dillon of Charlotte was the
Best Man. The bride is a graduate
of Marlboro Academy, Bennette
ville. South Carolina and of St.
Andrews Presbyterian College in
Laurinburg. She is presently
employed by the State of North
Carolina as Deputy Clerk of
Superior Court of Scotland Coun
ty.
The groom is a graduate of
South View High School, Fayette
ville, and attended Lees-McRae
College in Banner Elk, and St. An
drews Presbyterian College. He is
assistant Manager of B.C. Moore's
and Sons Inc., in McColl, South
Carolina.
RECEPTION
A reception given by Mrs.
Robert M. Beacham, mother of
the bride, and Robert Beachman,
Jr.. brother of the bride, was held
at the Gill House in Laurinburg.
Mixed spring flowers adorned the
reception rooms and the bride's
register was decorated with pink
camelias. Mr. A.R. Bullock, Jr.,
of Fairmont, and Mrs. L.D. Edens
of Lumberton were assisting at the
register. Greeting the guests were
Mr. and Mrs. Noah Usher, aunt
and uncle of the bride, of McColl
South Carolina.
The refreshment table was
decorated by a centerpiece of
American Beauty roses, pink and
ivory lilies and baby's breath ar
ranged in a brass bowl. Mauve
candles glittered in brass holders.
The three tiered wedding cake was
served by Mrs. William F . Monroe
of Laurinburg and Miss Anna Jo
Barrington of Gibson. Serving
punch were Mrs. Robert B. Davis
and Mrs. Eugene Sligh, both of
Laurinburg. Also serving at a
punch table were Mrs. Russell
Hellekson and Mrs. Neill C. Col
llins Jr., of Maxton. Others
assisting in the reception were Mr.

enjoyed a cold buffet supper, with
a very special cake made for this
occasion by Mrs. David Humphrey

A bride's luncheon was given in
the home of Mrs. Robert B. Davis,
Saturday, March 5, at 11:30.
The hostesses, Mrs. Robert
Davis and Miss Joy Lynn Davis, ^
maid of honor, served a delicious
meal of baked chicken, buttered
broccoli, rice casserole, jello salad,
rolls, iced tea and dessert.
Special guests were Mrs. Robert
M. Beacham, mother of the bride,
Mrs. Charles C. Ansley and Miss
Caroline Ansley, mother and sister
of the groom, Mrs. Noah Usher,
Jr. and Miss Lise Usher, aunt and
cousin of the bride.
