Julian Butler Is Honored By Cape Fear Scout Group Julian Butler of Raeford was one of four persons honored Fri day evening as over 200 Scout and community leaders gathered at Bladenboro Primary School for the Annual Scout Council Recognition Banquet. The banquet is held to recognize Scouting leaders from Hoke, Scotland, Robeson, Bladen, Col umbus, Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties. The highlight of the banquet was the awarding of the Silver Beaver Award. This award is to recognize those Scouters who have given distinguished service over a period of time that affected Scouts throughout the Council. Recipients should also have shown leadership in other civic areas, particularly those affecting youth. The Silver Beaver is given by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America on the recom mendation of the local Council. Butler is best known for his many years of service as Scout master but he has also served on numerous council and district functions including Council Ex ecutive Board, Council Finance Committee, Western District Com mittee, and serves as Order of the Arrow Lodge Advisor. Julian is active in the Presbyterian Church and serves in many other leadership positions in community life in Hoke County. "We suggest you continue your support of the U.S. 401 project through local officials, legislators and the Board of Transportation member for your area," the DOT Secretary said. DOT will schedule public meetings in the future which would include U.S. 401, and "these meetings offer an excellent oppor tunity to voice your thoughts." Currently, DOT does have fund ing (or paved shoulders to be add ed to U.S. 401 for a 5.8 mile sec tion east of Raeford to the Cumberland County line. The project is scheduled for the next fiscal year. "Until major widening of U.S. 401 is possible, we will continue to monitor traffic conditions in this area," Roberson said in the letter. Local officials have been at Unemployment Drops Despite a decline in the number of workers on the job, the unemploment rate in Hoke County dropped by almost 2?^> during December, figures released Mon day by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission show. During the month, the percen tage of unemployed workers drop ped from 12^o to I0.1??o. According to the figures, 60 workers lost jobs, but 240 persons were dropped from the county work force. In November, there were 8,160 county residents in the work force, however, during December that number declined to 7,920. The number of person employed in the county also dropped from 7,180 in November to 7,120 in December. During November, the county had 980 workers unemployed. That number dropped to 800 in December. In 1982, there were 960 persons out of work during December for a jobless rate of 12%.
