Danny McDiarmid Honored As Eagle Scout Danny McDiarmid, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny McDiarmid, was 9 recently named to the rank of Eagle Scout and was honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor celebration at Raeford United Methodist Church. Danny joined Boy Scouts in 1980 and since then has been distinguished with leadership and merit badges from all facets of scouting. His special awards in elude Historic Trails, Order of the W Arrow, Ordeal, Klahican Lodge 331, and High Adventure. In 1983, he attended the Philmont Scout Rand in New Mexico. Danny has achieved 22 Merit badges. Twenty one are required for the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Danny organized scouts from Troop 404 ? to collect articles for a yard sale. Proceeds of $250.00 were earned and given to the Hoke County Children's Center. During this special ceremony for Danny, Scoutmaster Julian D. Danny McDiarmid Butler presented Danny his Eagle award. Approximately 70 guests attended the ceremony. Attending the occasion from out of town were Harold Nixon Cary and Mitzi Smith of Greensboro, Polly Hancock, of Cameron, Iris_ Milliron of Sanford, Mr. and Mrs." James Nixon of Aberdeen and Doreen Bailey of Fayetteville. Danny is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Nixon of Aber deen and Mr. and Mrs. Archie McDiarmid of Raeford. Volunteers Help Schools Children and teachers in all ^ areas of the county have benefited w from the help provided by volunteers in all the schools. In a survey of the seven schools, it was found that 235 adults and 23 students have volunteered since school began in September. The 23 students are seniors at Hoke High School who belong to an organization known as HOSTS. These young people have ? volunteered to tutor fellow students who have trouble with certain subjects they take each day. HOSTS members devote as many as 4 hours per week to this pro gram. Volunteers have also been a great help in the Cultural Arts Pro gram. These people have aided in fund raising drives, they have ac companied students on trips, and have assisted in preparing for con certs and programs. In vocational education classes, volunteers have come from in dustries such as Burlington and Faberge. There have also been many individuals who have shared the knowledge they have in a par ticular area, with students. Raeford Students Honored By UNC-Ch Donald Steven Matthews and Todd Durant McDiarraid, both of Rdeford, have been named to the fall 1983 Dean's List from the University of North Carolina at t Chapel Hill. Students must complete 15 letter grade hours with a semester grade point average, of 3.2 (A *= 4r B *= C = 2, D = 1), or have a 3.5 grade point average over 12 semester hours (with no grade below a C) to be included in the list. Parish Named To UNC-Ch Dean's List Rose Marie Parish of Raeford has been named to the Dean's List at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for the Fall Semester. In order to achieve the honor, Parish had to maintain at least a 3.2 average and could not have a grade lower than "C." Couple Attends Awards Banquet Earl and Marie Chason of Rockfish attended the annual Ser viceMaster Management Services Corporation awards banquet at the Omni International Hotel in Nor folk, Virginia on January 21. Chason was one of five managers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area to be nominated for an award for lnservice Education of the employees in their hospital or college facility. Chason also received a gold tie pin in recognition of 5 _ years of employment with ServiceMaster Management Services Corpora tion- ~ . ~r Chason serves as Director ot Plant Operations and Maintenance at Kershaw County Memorial Hospital in Camden, South Carolina where he has been since September 1982. f , _ Marie is co-operator of the Cor ner Cafe on Main Street in Raeford. They reside in Rockfish with their three children. Galilee Methodist Women's Group To Present Concert The Galilee United Methodist Women's Organization is presen ting The Bennett College Choir in concert on February 4, at 7 p.m. at the Galilee United Methodist Church. The church is located on McGirt's Bridge Road in Laurin burg. . , , . Bennett College is located in Greensboro. Its choir has an exten sive repertoire in pop, jazz, spirituals and classical music. Each year, the choir tours several cities and states. Personals The United States Achievmeent Academy recently announced their 1984 National Award winners. Among these were three Hoke County High School students. lcesonnia Horsley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Horsley of Raeford. lcesonnia was named to the honor roll of the Academy^ Lisa Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Williams of Raeford, was cited for leadership and honor roll merits. Annie A. Chambers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Chambers of Raeford, was awarded the government and law citation. These students have attained an honor awarded onlv to 10?7o of all American high school students. Nominations are made by teacher recommendation and forwarded to the academy for final selection.
