Poison Control Center Saving NC Residents By Beth Parsons Duke Univ. Medical Center As Dr. Shirley Osterhout sits in her office between appointments, the Poison Control Center beeper beside her goes off. Osterhout, director of the Poison Control Center, quickly dials the number and is connected to an anxious-sounding woman in Haywood County. Her 2-year-olii daughter has eaten some green ber ries and what should she do? Osterhout calmly questions the woman as to how many berries the child ate and what kind of plant they came from. After several more questions, Osterhout confirms the berries are from a sour gum tree, that they are not poisonous and that the child will be okay after drinking a glass of milk. The woman thanks Osterhout and hurriedly hangs up, as Osterhout fills out a card recording the call and the details. "We get an average of 30 calls like that a day," the pediatrician said. "In half the month of August alone, we had 600 calls," Glancing at that day's cards, she notes the last four calls have ranged from Raleigh, Murphy, Siler City and Tabor City. People needing information about poisoning, as well as com munity hospitals and clinics needing quick medical advice, have called Duke's Poison Control Center since it began in 1954, mak ing it the second oldest in the coun try. Access became even easier in 1982 when a toll-free number was offered to in-state callers. For callers from outside Durham County, the toll-free number is 1-800-672-1697. Now the Poison Control Center has been designated the official state poison information and con trol service and has been awarded a two-year $360,000 contract by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. Duke was chosen by state of ficials as the poison information and control service most able to fill the requirements of the contract. Those requirements included the ability to maintain a 24-hour toll free telephone service staffed by professional consultants. A state survey last year iden tified 13 poison information ser vices in North Carolina, but most were regional and few offered round-the-clock service all year.
