Heart Drive Kicks Off Sunday Each year on the last Sunday in February, doorbells ring all over the nation as more than 2 million volunteers visit their neighbors to leave educational materials and ask for contribuitons to the Heart Fund. Heart Sunday in Hoke County is next Sunday, February 26, accor ding to Charlotta Howell, Residen tial Campaign Chairperson for the Hoke County Heart Association. "The Heart Association has been fighting for 30 years to stem the tide of cardiovascular disease, and it is only in the last six years that we have seen the tide begin to turn," Mrs. Howell said. "Although it still kills more peo ple than all other causes combined, the death rate from heart and blood vessel disease began declin ing in 1978 and has continued downward. "Many medical scientists have expressed their opinions that the drop is due in large part to the research, professional and public education, and medical and com munity programs supported by the Heart Fund, and we want to give everyone a chance to contribute to this life-saving work," she said. Heart Sunday volunteers in Raeford number more than 35, most of them assigned to collect Heart Fund donations in their own neighborhoods, accordin R tO Carolyn McGee, Heart Sunday Chairperson. They include the following: Ir ma Hedgpeth - Captain, Betty McFadyen, Sarah Hodges, Sonya Falls, Jackie Haddon, Gloria Prevatt, Joanne Sessoms, Nancy Martin, Mary Stanley; Peggy Southerland ? Captain, Sarah Leach, Nancy Smith, Maxine Col ston, Eddie Ellis, Tracy Weston, Jean Wright, Becky Smith; Anne Hostetler - Captain, Ella Gibson, Ellen Currie, Lula Davis, Jo Hud son, Mary Neil King, Kay Myers, Betty Stogner, Lib Stone; Nora Scull - Captain, Elizabeth Burgess, Elga Langdon, Edna Lou Poole, Martha Ann Brown, Audra Hen drix, Violet Adkins, Anita Lentz and Gwen Booker - Captain, Ver na Barnhill, Raeford Juniorettes, and members of the Raeford Junior Women's Club. The week of February 26 has also been designated Rural Heart Week, according to Charlotte Kel ly, Rural Heart Fund Chairperson of the Hoke County Heart Association. "Our goal is to reach every home in our rural areas to leave educational material and to receive donations to the 1984 Heart Fund," she said. "Because of the distance that many people in rural areas must travel to get to a hospital, it is im portant that they know the warn * ing signs of a possible heart attack and act immediately to help the victim," Mrs. Kelly said. \ "This means calling an emergen cy squad for transportation or driving the person to the hospital." She listed the following signs of heart attack. ~ -Prolonged heavy pressure or * squeezing pain in the center of the chest behind the breastbone; -Pain spreading to the shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw; -Pain or discomfort followed by sweating, nausea, vomiting, or shortness of breath. _ "These symptoms may subside and then return, but don't wait. Get the person to a hospital emergency room at once," Kelly ^ said. Public education on heart at tack, stroke, high blood pressure, and other form of heart disease is one of the programs supported by the Heart Fund, Mrs. Kelly pointed out. Other programs cover research, professional education and train ing, and community service. All Heart Fund contributions | are tax deductible. Those helping Mrs. Kelly with the Rural Campaign include Nor ma Campbell, Vivian Malloy, Vi vian Jacobs, Effie McCollum, Mary Ann Shepley, Gloria McLaughlin and Carol Page.
