?* Jordan: Small Counties Will Gel Attention uiving Hoke County and other smaller areas of the state "a voice" in North Carolina government is one of the top priorities "in my husband's campaign," Raeford native Sarah Jordan said during a recent visit to her 4 'home town." Jordan was in town promoting her husband, state Senator Bob Jordan, who is campaigning for the Lt. Governor's position. "I wanted to come here firs'," Sarah Jordan said. "This is my home town, and 1 wanted to start right here with this campaign," she added. "Hoke has not really been represented state-wide but with Bob it will be," Jordan said. "It is important for the people to know they have someone that will represent their needs," she added. "Bob understands the needs of a small community," Jordan said. The state senator, who also chairs the base budget committee, was born in Montgomery County and presently operates a lumber business there. The four-term legislator is "very interested" in "helping small businesses get off the ground," aiding in agriculture and bettering economic development, education, day care and helping the elderly, Jordan said. "Bob wants to see North Carolina grow and get better," she added. "He js a recognized advocate of all people's rights and he will fight for those rights if elected," Jordan said. "Bob has had and will continue to have an open door policy," she added. "He is a capable leader." Jordan, who said she "loved campaigning for her husband, has also been "involved" with helping North Carolina. Last week, Jordan saw "a major accomplishment" that she helped instigate become a reality as North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt placed a memorial to the state's war dead in the Memorial Am phitheatre at Washington's Arl ington National Cemetery. "Bob sponsored the senate bill and it passed," Jordan said. "I just could not believe we had never had a memorial for war dead," she added. "When I went to Arlington and saw we were not represented, I knew something had to be done," Jordan said. Jordan admits that she is "very proud" of "that particular ac complishment." "Bob was proud too," she add ed. "We did that together," Jordan said. "When you get Bob, you get me," she added. Niven, a Raeford resident, ran for the position "once before" against a field of six candidates. "I want to be able to work with and serve the public," Niven said. "I can do that through this posi tion," she added. Niven, who has lived in Raeford since her elementary school days, has worked with the state and federal government for "at least" 25 years. * She held a position with the Hoke County Extension office and worked "when they needed me" with the county tax office. "I really have had a lot of ex perience in many phases of business," Niven said. "I have supported Raeford and Hoke County for many years through business and community service," she added. Niven, who is a charter member of the Raeford Woman's Club Public Affairs Department and Circle Chairman, has also been "involved" with the school system. "1 helped raise money for band uniforms one year. We made enough to buy everyone in the band a uniform," Niven said. "1 feel like 1 would be continu ing to help this community by run ning for this office," she added. "I will be doing my part. I feel like I can do a good job," Niven said. "I felt like I should give it a try. 1 want to help," she added. D. Maynor Bids For Re-election Hoke Register of Deeds Delia Maynor is hoping that she will be able to "hold" her position after the November election. Maynor, who is running for her third term as register of deeds, will be pitted against Raeford resident Hazel Niven for the post. "I am seeking re-election because 1 love my job," Maynor said. "I have worked in this office for 10 and a half years, and I think 1 am qualified to handle the job," she added. Maynor, who attends all state workshops, district meetings and conventions, believes she is "more qualified" to run the register of deeds office. "1 am qualified to run this office efficiently. We are able to handle any situation which will occur," Maynor said. "I have served all of the people of this county in a professional manner and will continue to do so if re-elected," she added.
