Submarine service Ken Sigworth, Raleigh (left): Star Sessoms, Raeford, ( second from left), Frank Allen, Raleigh, (with belt) and Pat Martiere, Greensboro (right), were honored during a meeting of 44 members and wives of the North Carolina Chapter of Submarine Veterans of World War II held at the home of Frank Allen, in Raleigh on February 18. This na tional organization was formed 29 years ago in Atlantic City, New Jersey. "To perpetuate the memory of those shipmates who gave their lives in submarine warfare: to further promote and keep alive the spirit and unity that existed among sub marine crewmen during World War II: to promote sociability, general welfare and good fellowship among its members: and pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States government. " There are 51 state chapters covering all 50 slates and Washington, D.C. The North Carolina chapter of United States Submarine Veterans of world War II was chartered in 1973 with Star Sessoms of Raeford as the first state commander. Sessoms was followed by Ken Sigworth of Raleigh as state commander and Frank Allen of Raleigh as state secretary treasurer. The present state commander is Mr. Pat Martiere of Greensboro. The North Carolina chapter has 56 members. Tuesday Named 'Business Day' For Local Heart Fund Effort Tom Howell, Business Day Chairperson for the 1984 Heart Fund Campaign has announced that Business Day in Raeford will be Tuesday, March 6. Howell, along with Tony Austin, Jimmy Wood, Alfred K. Leach Jr., and Duncan McFadyen will solicit contributions from business owners, and managers and professional people. Howell is a life-long resident of Hoke County. He graduated in 1976 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy. He is now President of Howell Drug Company, Incor porated. "The support of the business and professional community in Raeford has always been impor tant in helping the Hoke County Heart Association better serve residents of Hoke County. But a contribution on Business Day helps the business people themselves. It's estimated that in 1984 cardiovascular diseases will cost the United States more than $64 billion! Twelve billion dollars of that is attributed to lost job hours by workers who have had car diovascular problems. Through its industrial and public hypertension screening pro grams, heart attack and stroke rehabilitation programs, the Heart Association is working to keep people on the job or to see that they return to work as soon as possible after stricken," Howell said. Howell urges area businesses to generously support the Heart Association during the business campaign. All contributions to the Heart Fund are tax-deductible. Wildlife Need Gardens Too By Willie Featherstone Jr. Hoke Extension Chairman Spring is just around the corner, and many folks will soon turn their attention to next summer's garden and it's a good idea to think not only about a garden for home use, but also to consider planting some "gardens" for wildlife too. All wildlife species have certain habitat requirements and these can often be provided with just a little supplemental effort on our part. The way to establish wildlife gardens for quail and rabbits is to locate suitable places about one eighth acre in size where food and cover plots can be planted. Some of the best places are field edges next to the woods, odd field corners, utility lines or small open ings in the woods. In these loca tions suitable escape and nesting cover is usually already available and all that is needed is a food sup ply. particularly for the winter. It is preferable to plant perennials which will provide a more perma nent food supply, although annual plants can be used. For permanent planting for quail, the best plants are shrub lespedeza and partridge pea. These are available from the North ROOFING Specializing In All Types Insurance Repairs Call For Free Estimate On Any Construction A & G CONSTRUCTION Archie Maxwell. Annual seed mixtures are also available to use in places where a permanent food patch cannot be located. These usually contain varieties of soybeans, cow peas, millet and other plants which pro vide good fall and winter food. For rabbits, you may wish to add a strip of clover or grass alongside the quail food, and this will provide some areas for quail broods to forage for insects in summertime. If cover is lacing, sericea lespedeza should be planted in a strip next to the food patch. The shape of the planting is determined somewhat by the loca tion, but generally it should be in a strip about 15-20 feet wide when located along a field or woods edge. In odd corners and woods openings, it may conform to the shape of the opening, but preferably should be rectangular in shape. Of course, you won't actually plant your wildlife gardens until spring comes and the danper of frosl is past, but, it's not too early to pick out the locations and get the seedbed prepared when the soil INSULATION FREE ESTIMATES Save On Heating & Cooling FIBERGLAS CELLULOSE We Specialize In Blown And Batt Insulation LICENSED CONTRACTOR TUTTLE'S Repair Service 6% FINANCING Available from Carolina Power b Light Co 875-2154 - 875-5339 CHURCH of GOD MISSIOH Tmkm 211 N to Pmr6'& Rottmuront. turn toft ond go appro m 4 mMoo siroipht mr>d wvmtch for M/a tion SJjn Open Dally 10 to 8 Cloaad Sunday Agent Jean Hugglna PLEASE THROW NOTH IN' AWAY We accept donations, food and usable fur niture, optionees, out mobiles, trucks, clething, toys, books, dishes and miscellaneous items. The supply usually runs out before all the orders can be filled. If you plant in the spring where you hunt in the fall, you'll find more game and have the added satisfaction of knowing that you helped put it there. SOIL TREATMKNT WITH MULTI-PURPOSE CHEMICALS We still have left several materials which can be used as multi-purpose chemicals this season. These include Telone C-17, Vorlex, and Terr-O-Cide 15D. As mentioned above, those containing ethylene dibromide, such as Terr O-C'ide 30, are no longer available. I understand that the prices of those materials still available have increased substantially since last season. This, of course, puts a heavy economic strain on farmers who did find it necessary to use such materials. In the interest of economic efficiency, therefore, it becomes extremely important for each farmer to know the problems that he facts on his farm and to treat only with appropriate materials, as needed.
