Lt. Governor welcomed Hoke County school officials gathered last Thursday at Upchurch Junior High School to welcome North Carolina Lt. Governor Jimmy Green. Green was in Raeford to tour the junior high school and see the " Jimmy Green Program" at work. Green, who arrived ground 9:30 a.m., visited every class, talked with the students and ate lunch with them before leaving. The program, which began this school year, involves 50 seventh-graders who are academically qualified for the program. The program includes vocational training in business machines, computers, carpentry and welding. Upchurch received 532,000 this year for the program. According to Upchurch Principal Allen Edwards, $10, 500 of that money has gone for teacher 's s salaries with the remainder being used for materials and supplies used In the program. " It is the least restrictive money I have ever had, " Edwards said. ( Photo by Pam Frederick) Bucks beat 71st The Hoke High Bucks roared past Fayetteville's Seventy-First High School Tuesday night with a 53-47 victory, taking the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A playoffs. Hoke had defeated the Falcons twice during December. The Bucks outscored Seventy First 17-6 in the fourth quarter after coming back from a six-point deficit earlier in the game. Hoke forward Tony McRae pro duced a game high score of 18 points, scoring eight of those points during the final quarter of play. Teammate James Graham was the only other Hoke player to hit double-digits during the game. Graham finished the night with 14 points. Barriet Easterling scored five points, Harry Southerland added four, Bruce Moore scored six points and Marco Pickett had two to round out scoring for the Buck squad. The Tuesday night win advances the Bucks to the March 15-17 Eastern Regionals at Wilson Hunt High School. . . . Funds sought (Continued from page 1) the regional coordinator this week, are funds for four teachers, a librarian, instructional and audiovisual materials, bus drivers and testing supplies. Hayes told the board members that she "did not expect" to need any additional local funds for the project. The summer school project is projected to benefit approximately 61 migrant students, Hayes said. "We feel that there will be more migrant children involved with the summer school program than were enrolled during the regular school year," she added. According to Hayes, the migrant summer school session will last six weeks and benefit, students in kindergarten through eighth grade. "We may not get all the money we are asking for, but I think we will at least get a portion," Hayes said. "They told us to dream big when we applied for these funds. ..we did," she added. "We have had a good batting average in getting this type of fun ding," Superintendent Bob Nelson said. "I think we will get the funding," he added. Funding for the program is ex pected to be approved by mid to late April, Hayes said. School board members also authorized Hayes to apply for $97,559 for the IEP. The program calls for "yearly funding" that will help implement programs that will "benefit Indian students," according to Hayes. These programs are designed as "extra-curricular activities" that "will not interfere" with the regular school schedule. ...Around Town (Continued from page 1) Hoke High Bucks had won the conference tournament. I hope their luck will holdout and they will go on to win the state title. ? ? * The Mondaie landslide for the Democratic nomination for presi dent seems to all of a sudden started sliding in the opposite direction. If he loses in Florida, Alabama and Georgia on March 13, he may have to pack his bags like some of the other candidates. Anyway at this stage of the con test it seems like Gary Hart has the right answers for the folks at the polls. There is still time to register for the May 8th primary in Hoke County. If you haven't registered then go by the Hoke County Library before April 6 and do so. Former Hoke officer wounded in shootout Former Hoke County Highway Patrolman L.B.
