Bringing in the harvest Timber Is one of this county's major industries, and access to timber tracts is not as good, fewer snakes these loggers are attempting to beat warm weather and mosquitos are usually about in winter, by harvesting during the colder months. Although x . . . Around Town continued (Continued from page 1) Arabia Golf Course, showed me a letter he received on March 6 from UCB in Raeford. It was postmark ed February 28 and had taken seven days to go from Raeford to Arabia. According to Hendrix the infor mation in the letter was useless to him because the event he was being informed of had already taken place when he received the letter. Since the letter was stamped on a postage machine and was not cancelled it would be impossible to place blame on the post office. It could have stayed in the bank a few days before being mailed. These things happen but it makes you wonder if the machine age is better than the pony express. ? * ? Since the day I retired from Dickson Press, it has been good to hear of others that have reached that stage in life. Recently three of my friends have retired and I welcome them to the club. They are Martin Webb, January 29; Ellen Currie, March 2; and Ray mond Maxwell, March 12. I don't have any information on Martin and Raymond, But will give a few facts on Ellen. Ellen started to work at Fort Bragg in February 1951 in the Sup ply artd Service Department of the Army. She saw things change from the pen and paper to the computer age in her department. On March 2, she retired after 33 years of work at Fort Bragg. Con gratulations. Martin worked at Womack 8 Sowing* You Can In... Only at the end of the article was anything good said about Hoke County. I have been a resident of Hoke County all but seven years since it was formed in 1911 and I was born in 1918. During that time there was the great depression and many recessions. As a worker on this newspaper for 49 years, I have still to recall any soup lines or starva tions in the county. All the official boards, in my opinion, have been wise in the spending of money and the quality of education has met the needs of the students on par with all other schools. I don't consider myself poor but proud. 1 have been rich and proud to have lived in Hoke County for 66 years and hope to live 66 more, if not longer. Negative writing is bad jour nalism. Precinct meetings draw 150 Demos Over 150 Hoke Democrats turn ed out for the March I precinct meetings where delegates were elected to the county party conven tion. The county convention is slated for Saturday April 14 at 1 p.m. in the Hoke County Courthouse. "I think the meetings were well attended, Hoke County Democratic Party Chairman Harold Gillis said. During the meetings, Raeford Precinct 2 elected a new chairman to replace newly appointed District Court Judge Warren L. Pate. Wendell Young was appointed to fill Pate's former position.
