A lesson in newspaper writing Members of Ethelyn Baker*s third-grade West Hoke School class scan , a recent edition of The News Journal as part of their participation in Newspaper in Education Week. As part of their studies, the students ' received first-hand information from News-Journal Editor Warren Johnston. The students learned about the "rewarding and exciting " experiences of the newspaper business. Louise Barnwell's third-grade class were guests during the presentation. Deaths & Funerals Mary E. Caulder Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Caulder, 68, died Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Raeford Church of God by Rev. 3.V. Childress. Burial will be in Raeford cemetery. Survivors are her husband: John E. Caulder of Raeford; five sons: Lester J. Caulder of Long Beach, William Ernest Caulder of Fayet teville, John C. Caulder, Thad Caulder and James Harley Caulder of Raeford; four daughters: Mrs. Thelma Willoughby of Red Springs, Mrs. Carol Altman of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Shirley Watts of Raeford and Mrs. Frances Tyner of Raeford; two sisters.' Mrs. Locile fiorteycllrf of Raeford and Mrs. Ina Wilkerson of White Oak, 25 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Crumpler Funeral Home assisted the family. John M. Linthicum John Mclvin Linthicum, 84, died Monday in Sumter, South Carolina. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday morning at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tex Deaton. Burial will be in Highland Biblical Gardens. Survivors are his wife: Mrs. Ad die B. Linthicum of Raeford; four sons: Bill Linthicum of Raeford, John Linthicum of Raeford, Ed Linthicum of Cheney, Washington and Lester Linthicum of Aber deen, five daughters: Mrs. Thelma Williams of Carrboro, Mrs. Jean Jones of Raleigh, Mrs. Dot Jones of Franklinton, Mrs; Johnsie Foster of Raeford and Mrs. Dfxie Freeman of Houston, Texas; one brother: Everette Linthicum of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 17 grand children and two great grand children. Crumpler Funeral Home is serv ing the family. Annie Y. Davis Mrs. Annie Young Davis, 81, died Wednesday evening in Moore Memorial Hospital in Pinehurst. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Buck Pamell. Burial was in Ralph Swamp Baptist Church cemetery. Survivors are three sons: Asbury Davis of Lumberton. Atlas Davis of Whitaker, California and John Marcus Davis of Raeford; two daughters: Mrs. Jackie Holl ingsworth of Raeford and Mrs. Maty Penny of Greenville; two sisters: Mrs. Sadie McKenny of Durham and Mrs. Mildred Cooper of Galivant's Ferry, South Carolina: 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Nominees being sought for volunteer awards Emma Mims was recently ap pointed by the Hoke County Com mission as Chairman of the Com munity Involvement Committee, i dividuals and groups are being encouraged to search out and nominate deserving persons who have volunteered their services to the community. Mims and Leach attended a Leadership workshop sponsored by the Governor's office on Tues day. The purpose of the workshop was to review the successes of the Councils, identify the challenges for the future, and plan how to strengthen citizen participation and volunteerism in each County. Gatlin receives Scholars Grant Susanna Gatlin, a senior at Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, South Carolina has been awarded a Younger Scholars Grant from the National Endow ment for the Humanities. The $1,800 grant will be used to study Charleston, South Carolina, theatre in the 18th century. Gatlin is one of only two high school students in the United States to be selected for this honor. Sixty-seven college students also received Younger Scholars Grants in 1984, the program's first year of operation. Most of Gatlin's research for the nine-week project will take place in the library at Furman University in Greenville, but she will also visit Charleston. Her supervisor for the project will be Dr. Philip Hill, chairman of the Furman drama department. Gatlin is the daughter of Dr. Judith Gatlin, director of educa tional services at Furman, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Gatlin, Jr. of Raeford. The Johnson Company INSURANCE AUTO ?
