Children's Center seeking different, larger quarters w The Hoke County Children's Center is seeking support in an ef fort to purchase larger quarters for the mentally and physically han dicapped children they serve, Director Ann Johnson said. "We want to raise enough money to make a down payment on a larger building," Johnson I said. " "The one we have is very inade quate in relation to size," she add ed. At present the center, located on Donaldson Avenue, houses 16 children and four full-time staff members in four rooms. "We have five children on a waiting list right now. We just do not have the room for them," Johnson said. I "We are at our maximum enrollment. We have been for a good while," she added. According to the director, the center needs "about $14,000" to make the move. "We have approximately $6,000 in our building fund," Johnson said. "We are hoping to solicit con tributions from local businesses and foundations as well as others across the United States," she add ed. Johnson and her Children Center board are looking for a new facility in the Raeford area. "We have not found anything definite...nothing I can talk about at this point," Johnson said. The center, which was founded in 1974 and got its start in the Raeford Baptist Church basement, generates "a great percentage" of its funding from state and federal grants. No county money is allotted for the center, according to Johnson. The county funds are distributed to the Hoke County Association for the Developmentally Disabled and is used to fund the adult pro gram, Johnson said. The county board allots approx imately $8,000 to this program. According to Johnson, two thirds of the center's funding is generated through the Sandhills Mental Health Center, state development funds and federal Ti tle 25 funds. The remaining one-third of the center's funding come from "private donations and fund raisers." "We tap into a lot of different sources for support," Johnson said. At present, Johnson and her staff are seeking to hold fund raisers to help fund a new facility. "We are selling Children's Center T-shirts to help raise money. We are also planning a Gospel singing in late spring," Johnson said. "We are doing everything in our power to get the money for a new facility," she added. "People in this area know and believe in what we are doing...that is why the center has survived," Johnson said. "I think they will support our efforts," she added. "We would like to offer our ser vices to more children. If we get a new facility we will be able to do this," Johnson said. "It is something we really need," she added.
