Hoke student wins
driver's ed roadeo
A Hoke High Driver's Ed stu
dent garnered the most points and
captured a first place win in a
Roadeo held Saturday.
Rebecca Walters won the com
petition, and another Hoke stu
dent, Jeff Melton, placed 12th out
of 22 competitors.
By winning, Rebecca has
qualified for the state Roadeo held
on April 26 in Charlotte.
The Roadeo was sponsored by
the Southeastern North Carolina
Driver Traffic Safety Education
Association.
The contest consisted of eight
different skills on a Range.
Each student collected 20 points
for each maneuver; if they finished
the course without penalty points,
they could have scored 16 points.
Rebecca scored 144 points.
Two students from Fayetteville
placed second and third.
Rebecca will also represent
Hoke High school in the 1984 ver
sion of Dodge - Amvets Drive ex
cellence program to be held April
5.
Hoke High FHA plans events
Hot dogs and a spring planning
session were the highlight of the
March 12 night meeting of the
Hoke High School FHA Chapter.
Plans were finalized for Profi
ciency Events to take place on
April 19, at Scotland High School.

been accepted to attend North
Carolina State University in the
fall and are expected to attend the
university's annual "Minority
Visitation Day" Saturday. Many

by the NCSU Admissions Office as

students to enroll at N.C. State.
According to the event's coor
dinator, Ms. Rhonda Whitten

missions, most of the day's events
will take place on the University
Student Center Plaza, weather per
mitting.
The schedule includes a welcome
talk at 10 a.m. by NCSU Provost
and Vice Chancellor Nash N.
Winstead and presentations from
the faculty, student services, finan
cial aid and a talk by Ms. Kimi
Jones, a black sophomore at the
university.

complete with entertainment by
the NCSU New Horizons Choir.
The students will have an oppor
tunity to visit their prospective
departments, tour the campus and
meet with successful black student
