Vocational exhibits win at district fair Saturday The Vocational Trade and In dustrial Department of Hoke High School received top honors in the ninth Annual District IV Voca tional Education Fair at Cross Creek Mall on Saturday. There were a total of 66 exhibits displayed in the fair. Electricity teacher James Bax ley, textile teacher Bissett, and electronics teacher Arthur Kemp, along with their students, placed an exhibit in the fair portraying their programs. Included in each exhibit was equipment and materials used in the classroom. During the course of the fair the students demonstrated activities which featured students learning by doing. All programs also demonstrated "Building the Skills in North Carolina." All of Hoke County's exhibits received a BLUE ribbon, the highest awarded. Each booth was judged by five judges, who resided outside the District. Each exhibit was judged on the areas of student involvement, ap propriateness of Exhibit, eye ap peal and creativity. A predetermined number of points were assigned to each of these areas, and then a total score was determined. Teachers have an opportunity to observe other exhibits from other schools in the district as well as talk and exchange views and sug gestions from other teachers. The community and the ad ministration staff extends their congratulations to each of the par ticipants. For the first time, the local Directors of Vocational Education of the District presented to the first place winner a $50 check along with a plaque. This award was won by the Ad vanced Foods and Nutrition pro gram from Clarkton High School, Bladen County. ...Committee develops school plan (Continued from page I A) at West Hoke and 10 at Hoke High. All these buildings can be con structed at an estimated cost of nearly S5 million. "It probably can be done cheaper than that," Archer said. "There are other ways to figure the actual cost," he added. "If we follow the plan, adding all the additions at Upchurch, we will have a new facility," McNeill said. According to McNeill, the step by step building process could save the schools over $1 million. Although several alternative plans for re-vamping the facilities were discussed, board members were hesitant to make ahy ffrral decisions. "I think we need to find out if we have enough land at Upchurch to do these things," Committee member Earl Fowler said. "We really need to get things go ing. We don't have much time left," Gibson said. The committee, appointed by the school board and the county commissioners, was charged to complete their recommendations and hold a public hearing before May I.
