I Frosh softballers top Lumberton, drop other By Ed Miller The Hoke High Ninth Grade Softball team split two games dur ing play last week. In the first game, played on Wednesday, East Lee topped the home team by a slim margin of 5-4. Of that game, coach Robert Taylor said, "It was a defensive game all the way. We just could not get a hit when we needed it." Despite the loss, outstanding performances were still turned in by Rosalind Day, Neicy Singletary and Jackie Hunt. All batted two for three for the Bucks. Better luck was with the team the following day when they played here against Lumberton. The Bucks won a decisive vie Vote <?* N.C. "We played good defense and we got our bats going." Outstanding players for this game were Jackie Hunt, Regina Oxendine and Certease Parker. All hit two for three. Lovette McLean also knocked out a grand slam homer. Taylor said,"Each time we lose a game, the team seems to bounce back with a very strong effort." In other sports news, the Hoke ' High Freshman Baseball team lost two last week. On Wednesday, the young Bucks went against East Lee and lost 3-0. Thursday- saw them fighting again only to lose to Lumberton 7-2. Main - lUwford ?75-4111 Recreation Bits Men's softball The Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsoring a Men's Softball League for all interested men ages 16 and up. If you are interested in entering a team in the league or just playing yourself, contact the Recreation Office at 5-5603. The season is set to start May 1 at Armory Park. The deadline for a team's en try is Friday, April 27 at 5 p.m. Babe Ruth baseball The Parks and Recreation Commission is organizing a Babe Ruth Baseball League for all interested participants ages 13-15. Players eligible are those whose 16th birthday comes on or after August 1 or whose 13th birthday comes on or before August 1. Sign-ups will take place at Armory Park on April 23-26 (Monday-Thursday) from 4-6 p.m. All potential players must bring $3 to cover registration fees, before they will be allowed to sign-up. Participants are also requested to bring birth cer tificates, even if they have participated in a Recreation spon sored event prior to this season. Bambino baseball > (Formerly Little League) The Recreation Commission is organizing a Babe Ruth Bam bino League for all interested participants ages 10-12. Players eligible are those whose 12th birthday comes on or after August 1 or whose 10th birthday comes on or before August 1. Sign-ups will take place at Armory Park on April 16-19 (Monday-Thursday) from 4:00-6:00 p.m. All potential players must bring $3 to cover registration fees, before they will be allowed to sign-up. Participants are also requested to bring their birth certificates even if they have participated in a Recreation sponsored event prior to this season. Babe Ruth coaches meeting There will be a meeting for all interested Babe Ruth Baseball (13-15) Coaches at the Recreation Office on Monday, April 30 at 7 p.m. Suggestions and ideas are encouraged. Bambino baseball coaches meeting There will be a meeting for all interested Babe Ruth Bambino Baseball (10-12) Coaches at the Recreation Office on Tuesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. Bring your ideas and suggestions to the meeting. Liniment softball meeting The Recreation Committion will hold an organizational meeting for the Men's Liniment Softball League (ages 30-up) on Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. in the Recreation Office. All in terested teams should have a representative present. Women's Softball Meeting An organizational meeting will be held for those interested in playing in the Women's Softball League (ages 16-up) on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recreation Office. All in terested teams should have a representative present. T-ball coaches meeting A meeting will be held on May 2, at 7 p.m. in the Recreation Office for all interested in coaching a T-Ball team this summer.
