Though it is not clear which o f these came in first, thev were all w inners. The games, which were held last Thursday, drew young competitors from each of the county's seven schools and provided each participant and volunteer with a special day to remember. Last Thursday proved to be an almost perfect day for holding the Hoke County Special Olympics. Aside from the beautiful weather, there was a beauty of spirit and a friendliness of at mosphere that could be felt and seen throughout the games. The Hoke High Band lead the teams from every school in the county into the sports complex. There were teams with such names as: "Caldwell's Cougars" from J.W. McLauchlin, the "West Hoke Dolphins," the "Scurlock Scramblers," the "South Hoke Super Team" and the "Turlington Superstars." From Upchurch Jr. High came the "Super Smurfs," the "A-Team," and the "Up church Eagles." Hoke High field ed "Simpson's Sizzlers." After the welcome, the invoca tion and the national anthem, the Olympic torch was lit and the games were underway. Members of the Hoke High basketball team gave the oath of the special Olympics to the com petitors, and the games began. There was at least one event for everyone competing in the games. Everyone was able to do something. There was competition of every sort, which ranged from bubble bursting to regular track events like the 50-meter dash. Awards and medals were presented during the competition making the process flow smoothly. The games ended by 1:30 p.m. ahead of schedule. According to Ivey Thigpen, Director, Programs for Excep tional Children, "This year it was so well organized, we finished ear ly." Whether or not the finish was early or late, everyone who helped or who competed in the Special Olympics finished as winners.
