Smith awarded scholarship by Wake Forest . Kim Michelle Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry David Smith II of Raeford, has been awarded a George Hankins Scholarship at Wake Forest University. She is a senior at Hoke High School. Miss Smith is among 50 North'' Carolina high school seniors who have been awarded Hankins Scholarships. The winners were announced by William G. Starling, director of admissions and finan cial aid. The Hankins Scholars were selected for their scholarship and leadership potential. The scholar ships are valued up to $30,000 over four years. The Hankins Scholarship pro gram was established in 19S5 through income from an estate of more than $1 million left to Wake Forest by Col. George Foster Hankins of Lexington. Miss Smith is vice president of the National Honor Society and is chaplain for the library club. She is a member of the Spanish club, sports editor for the school, newspaper, a member of the mar ching band and band and received an athletic letter for tennis. Vocational chief chosen for office in NC school group Harold L. Gillis, a long-time educator in the Hoke County Schools, has been chosen President-Elect of the N.C. Association of School Ad ministrators. Gillis was elected at the organization's annual Spring Con ference in High Point on April 13. His term as President-Elect will begin on July 1 and he will assume the presidency on July 1, 1985. Gillis, Director of Vocational Education, has served previously as a teacher and Director of Driver Education in the Hoke County Schools. The N.C. Association of School Administrators is a 2,000 member statewide association of public school principals, supervisors, and superintendents. Reading to class Former Hoke County School Superintendent Raz Autry reads children's stories he has written to members of Maxine Colston's fourth grade class at Scurlock. Scurlock students hear loeal writers Maxine Colston's Fourth Grade at Scurlock School has been study ing poetry in their literature classes. They invited Robert Gatlin to visit their class. He recited poems he had written as well as ones he had memorized. He stress ed the importance of memorizing poetry at an early age and of creating ones of their own. Mrs. Colston's class also invited a community resource person to talk with them about being a writer of children's stories. Raz Autry discussed and read some stories he has written for children and told them about the children's book he is planning and is presently writing. Both visits were beneficial and helped the students better under stand poetry and the process of be ing a writer. Singing at McCain These members of the South Hoke Fourth-Grade Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Miriam McNeill, sang at McCain hospital recently.
