Edmisten is 42 and a native of Boone. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and of George Washington University Law School. Prior to becoming attorney general, he served as deputy chief counsel of the U.S. senate Select Committee that investigated Watergate. He has served three terms as attorney general. Through April, Edmisten had spent $1.76 million on his campaign. Lauch Fair cloth The 56-year-old D.M. "Lauch " Faircloth is attemp ting to take a successful 35-year business career into the governor's office. Faircloth, who is a native of Clinton, served until this year as secretary of commerce since 1977. He is a high school graduate, tobacco farmer and business man. Faircloth has outspent all contenders in his bid for the state's highest of fice. Through April, his cam paign had cost $ 1.78 million including $650,000 he had lent the effort personally. Faircloth has also served as chairman of the state highway commission. His platform is more jobs, avoid raising taxes and improved primary and education. .. - A! Eddie Knox Former Charlotte Mayor Ed die Knox is hoping his leader ship and Influence in the western part of the state will put him over the top in the balloting for governor. The 47-year-old Knox, has not on ly enlisted the help of former school Superintendent Raz Autry to help him in Hoke County, but he has also spent SI.4 million on his campaign statewide. Knox is a graduate of N.C. State University and the Wake Forest Law School. He served in the state Senate and practices law in Charlotte. Knox favors tax incentives for renovating old houses, downtown areas and historic structures. He also supports day care for businesses, im and improved" law enforce ment. Gilmore giving race a run Tom Gilmore, who has been actively campaigning longer than other candidates in the race for governor, is a resident of Julian and a graduate of N.C. State University. He has served in the state House and as deputy secretary of the state Depart ment of Human Resources. The 47-year-old Gilmore is the president of Gilmore Plant and Bulb Co. Through April, his campaign had cost $272,000, but he has raised $352,000. He is the chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Integrity, a non-profit research and educational organization whose pur pose is to recommend changes in policies to strengthen the North Carolina Constitution. John Ingram State Insurance Commissioner John R. Ingram, who hails from Cary, is hoping his ef forts to keep state insurance rates low will help his cam paign for governor. Ingram has spent the least of all the contenders with expenditures of $276,228. The 54-year-old is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Business School and law school. He has served in the state House for one term and is serving his third term as in surance commissioner. In 1978 he was the state's Democratic Party nominee for the U.S. Senate. Green is completing his second term as lieutenant governor, and he has also served in the state House and Senate. He was speaker of the House in 1975-76. He attended Washington and Lee Universi ty and was a combat Marine during World War II. The Clarkton resident is a tobacco warehouse owner. Green was the target of a F.B.I, investiga tion recently, but was cleared of all charges. He had spent S636,000 on his campaign through April.
