Man gets jail for want of $69 By Ed Miller A Raeford man was sentenced to the Hoke County Jail Friday for not paying a $69 court-ordered fine. Michael Priest of Rt. 1, who was in court last week charged with simple assault on another Raeford man, was held in jail because he had failed to pay the court for an earlier offense. Lawrence Morrisey, also of Rt. 1, had a warrant issued for Priest after the man apparently hit him in the nose with his fist and injured him seriously enough that he show ed up in court with the stitches still in place. For these actions, Priest received from District Court Judge Warren Pate, 30 days in jail suspended for one year unsupervised probation; however, Pate held the 28-year-old in contempt of court for failing to pay the fine imposed upon him for a previous conviction of disorderly conduct. Pate upheld the 30-day sentence until the defendant pays the previous fine and court costs. For his most recent conviction, Priest also had to pay yet another fine of $50 and restitution to Mor risley in the amount of $96. In other court action last week, Eugene Campbell was sentenced to 10 days in the Hoke County Jail for being drunk and disorderly in a public place. According to court records, the Raeford resident was arrested while lying across a sidewalk at the local Family Dollar Store on April 7. Campbell plead guilty to the charge. The strict sentence was imposed after Judge Pate commented, "this is not the first time you have been here on alcohol related charges." The 54-year-old man appeared unswayed by the sentence. Tammy Gay, a Red Springs resi dent, appeared in court last Friday on a warrant arrest accusing her of forgery. Court records show that Gay wrote a check for $90.50 belonging to a Betty Murphy, signed Mur phy's name to it and passed it to Sky City on October 10. She was found guilty of the charge. The 18-year-old Gay received a six month suspended sentence and one year's unsupervised probation plus a $300 Fine and court costs. A Shannon resident received a probationary sentence after ap pearing in court on Friday on charges of shoplifting. Joann L. McLaughlin was ar rested on February 7 for trying to steal a "Dig It" shirt from Sky Ci ty. The 28-year-old woman received a six month suspended sentence, one year unsupervised probation and a $100 fine plus court costs. Court records say that Horace Carthens, of Rt. 1 Red Springs is not to go near Anthony McKoy. This sentence was handed down because Carthens pointed a gun at McKoy. Carthens also received a 30-day suspended sentence. A Raeford resident was sentenc ed to 45 days in the Hoke County Jail beginning May 11. Matthew Sanders plead not guil ty to charges of driving while im pared (DWI) but was found guilty. Matthew's DWI arrest of March 24 was his fourth. Johnny Craycraft, of Rt. 2, Raeford will also be spending 10 days in jail on Five consecutive week-ends, records say. Craycraft was arrested on December 30 for DWI. The 40-year-old man had a previous conviction in 1977. He received a one year suspend ed sentence and was ordered to pay a $350 fine and court costs also. Daniel McNeill, of Rt. 3, Raeford also received a jail term for DWI. McNeill is to spend 24 hours in jail as well as pay a $100 Fine and spend one year on "special super vised probation." The 27-year-old McNe:!l is to report to the Hoke County Jail on May 12. In yet anotner DWI case, Charles Patterson, who was ar rested on April 24, was sentenced to 90 days in jail but had this sentence suspended for one year probation, a $150 Fine, and court costs.
