Sports Buck teams have up and down week Hoke County teams had a week of victory and defeat as they took on competitors from neighboring schools. On the last day of April, the Hoke High varsity softball team traveled to West Robeson High to do battle. Hoke came out on the bottom of that one, losing by a score of 4-3; however, coach Cheryl Farmer was not too disappointed with her team. "West Robeson is presently the number one team in the con ference. We really gave them a scare," she said. Farmer added,"We made two critical errors in the bottom of the fourth which possibly cost the game." "I am very proud of the im provement I have seen in this young team," she said. Vickie Cunningham was the outstanding player for that game batting three for three. Cunningham had a single, a tri ple, and a homerun with two rbi's. The next day, May 1, the team stayed home for a match-up with Scotland High. Out of this*one, Hoke emerged victorious. The final score was Hoke-10, Scotland-4. Thamasina Walker batted two for four in the game with a single, a triple and three rbi's. De De McLain also had a fine game as he also batted two for four with two singles and three rbi's. Farmer said, "This was a situa tion again where we wanted to give Scotland some of their own medicine." "We didn't score until the fourth inning where we got five runs and five more in sixth. Our problem now is that we are not consistant. This is one area that we definitely have to work on for next season," said Farmer. In other varsity sports, the Hoke High men's tennis team took a pair and lost one. On April 30, West Robeson came to Hoke High only to leave in defeat in a match that ended Hoke-7, West Robeson-2. The next day was not as glorious when the Bucks traveled to Scotland High. Scotland bettered Hoke in the match that ended Scotland-6, Hoke-3. On the road on May 3, the men's team tore-up Reid Ross in Fayet: teville. That match ended with the score Hoke-5, Reid Ross-4. The team's overall record now stands at 6 and 8. In preliminary races, Marco Pickett broke a school record in the 400 meters with a time of 51.05 seconds. He placed fifth in the finals.
