Outstanding junior officer
Paul Currie (right), formerly of Raeford, is presented an award for
being selected the Peterson Air Force Base 1983 Junior Officer of the
Year for the Headquarters Space Communications Division. The pla
que is being presented by Brigadier General John Paul Hyde, USAF,
during a recent awards banquet held to honor Currie's achievement.
Currie is the son of Lt. Col. and Mrs. D.S. Currie of Raeford. He is a
graduate of Hoke High School and of the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point.

recuperating at home after having
surgery at Highsmith-Rainey
Hospital in Fayetteville last week.
Paul Dove of Cheraw, South
Carolina celebrated his 9th birth
day at "Show Biz Pizza" last
Saturday. He was accompanied by
his mother Mrs. Buie Dove and
sister, Lisa and seven friends.

Francis Priest who has been
quite ill for several weeks seems to
be feeling better at this report.

Sandhills extension
offering new courses
for Hoke students
The Division of Continuing
Education at Sandhills Communi
ty College will begin several new
courses in Hoke County next
week. All of these classes are non
credit.
Inza Abernathy will be teaching
a class in Notary Public Education
at the Hoke County Public Library
on Tuesday and Thursday night,
May 22 and 24. The class will meet
from 7-9 p.m. Participants should
be 18 or older and possess a high
school diploma or its equivalent.
Students must also be registered

Carolina. The cost of this class is
$10.
Almeta Smith will be offering
two courses at the Wayside Com
munity Building on Wednesdays
beginning May 23 and continuing
through June 27. From 9-12 noon
Mrs. Smith will teach Sewing and
from 1-4 she will offer Quilting.
The registration fee is SIS for each
of these classes.
A course that will be offered for
the first time in Hoke County is
Sharon Shaw's "Survival Skills in
Written Communication."
The course is intended for those
planning to go to college from high
school, for older individuals in
terested in going to college but who
are frightened of writing, and for
those who simply want to improve
their communication skills.
The course is aimed toward in
dividualized or small group in
struction.
Students will be allowed to prac
tice whatever type of writing will
help them the most, whether it be
essays, letters, or sentences and
paragraphs.
This class will meet from 9-5 on
Monday ? Wednesday and from
9-2 on Thursday, May 21-24. The
registration fee is $10, and the class
will be held at the Hoke County
Public Library.
As with all classes offered at
Sandhills, there is no registration
fee for North Carolina residents
age 63 or older. Students may
register at the first class meeting.

named for 1983-84.
The distinction of class marshal
goes to the five junior students
who have earned the greatest
number of achievement points in
the Academy's weighted system of
grading.
The chief marshal is the student
with the highest academic rank in
the junior class.
Lori Ann Hayes is chief mar
shal. She is the daughter of Dalton
and Gloria Hayes of Lumberton.
Mary Elizabeth McNeill is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby
Burns McNeill of Raeford.
