Sports Softballers split games The Hoke High Varsity Softball team met with victory and defeat in recent games. The team was a winner on May 2 when Reid Ross came to Raeford to play. The final score was Hoke-10, Reid Ross-5 in a game about which Coach Cheryl Farmer said: "We had fun playing." Shepley 2-4, R. Cook 2-4 and G. Davis 2-4. Pittman Grove, which is noted for strong defense, has held its op ponents to only 1 run in 2 games. Next game will be home at Pitt man Grove Church next Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. against New Hope Baptist Church. Members of the team are: Player Coach J. Madden, Rev. R. Bar wich, Score Keeper Lois Batten, Capt. M. Madden, R. Cook, R. Shepley, C. Balton, G. Davis, P. Manning, T. Clark, T. Boahn, E. Ellis, G. Jackson and G. Harden. Woods takes second in S. Carolina race Don Woods, a member of the IEA Road Runners, won second place in a road race in Cayce, South Carolina on Saturday. The race was a three mile run. It was part of the Cayce Congaree Carnival. The Carnival was sponsored by the Cayce Jaycees, the Cayce Striders, and the South Carolina Department of Health and En vironmental Control. In the race, Don placed second in the 15-17 year old age division. Don completed the course in a time of 16:49. This placed him fifth overall in a field of 149 runners. Vickie Cunningham was one of the outstanding players in the game as she hit 4 for 4 with two singles, two doubles and four rbi's. Thomasina Walker also had a fine game with one rbi, hitting 3 for 4. Pitcher Kim Payne did her job well striking out three batters in the game,"two of these back to back in the fifth inning," Farmer said. "Everyone was relaxed and took each out and play situation one at a time," Farmer said. "1 was especially proud of Kim Payne who is my number two pit cher," she added. The girls did not do as well when they traveled to Pinecrest for a game there on Mav 8. Farmer cited the bad weather and the team's lack of practice for the 8-5 defeat. "We had a rally going in the sixth but we could not capitalize on this advantage," she said. Being at home on May 11 did not seem to help the team as they lost again to West Robeson by a score of 14-4. "The main thing that hurt us was defense. We could not execute basic, fundamental plays," Farmer said of this game. "As 1 have mentioned previous ly, we are not consistant and this is one area we must definitely work on for next season," the coach said. "I have a very young ball club," Farmer said. "I am really looking forward to developing these girls next season."
