The local students were among 350 pupils statewide who took part in the three-day event. Three HHS students attend state Close Up On May 17, 18 & 19 approx imately 350 students and teachers gathered in Raleigh for North Carolina CLOSE UP. Area representatives who were among the participants included Robert Barefoot, Brenda Hen dren, Nancy McNeill and their teacher coordinator, Alona McNeill. North Carolina CLOSE UP began in 1978. It is an educational program which was designed to allow students and their teachers to interact with stale officials, legislators, representatives from the news media, lobbyist organiza tions, etc. through panel discus sions, seminars, question and answer sessions, eic. The program is modeled after the highly sue cessful National Close Up program which provides opportunities for teachers and students to use Washington as a classroom in the same manner that Raleigh is used for the North Carolina program. North Carolina CLOSE UP is now in its seventh year of opera tion. It is governed and operated by a working advisory committee of teachers and administrators from North Carolina school systems and by the Social Studies Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Approximately 140 high schools including the North Carolina School for the Deaf will be par ticipating in this year's program. R.J. Reynolds, Inc. provides partial funding for this program. Dance festival on stage in Friday performance The Ann Clark School of Dance, Raeford Branch will be presenting their annual dance recital on Friday night, May 25 at 7:30. The performance will be held ai Upchurch Jr. High. The evening will be filled with ballet, tap and jazz numbers rang ing from the haunting "Swan Lake Theme" to the pulsating "Maniac." There will be guest dancers from the Lumberton studio. The highlight of the evening will be the Grand Pas de Deaux from Sleeping Beauty performed by Bonnie White and David Porter - principal dancers of the Dance Theater of Fayetteville. There will be a small admission charge for adults ? $2 and students - SI. Senior Citizens and children under 10 are free.
