Carpenter's qualifying leap came in the final round of jumps in last week's Eastern Regional track meet. Track Coach Howard Barkley said that Carpenter started the day with a jump of 22 feet, 2.25 inches, which was so far the best on the day and "with each jump he con tinued to improve." At times, he was well ahead of some of the best jumpers in the state, Barkley said. Before his final jump, Carpenter fouled and was put back in fifth place. This set up a situation in which he had to jump 22 feet 9 inches to finish fourth and one-half inch further to finish third. Carpenter did the latter sailing 22 feet 9.5 inches for a third place finish, Barkley said. Usually a strong runner. Carpenter failed to qualify for any running events. "There were some fast young men" in the 100 and 200 meter races, said Barkley. Carpenter did finish fifth overall in the 200 meter dash. /4s5/.
