School News Teachers retire Last week, the Hoke County Sorth Carolina Association of educators honored these two retiring teachers. Patricia D. Johnson (left) has taught in Hoke County for six years and was a teacher for 14 years before coming here. Emit S. Piestrak (right) has been giving students the benefit of his knowledge for over three decades, the last six and one-half of them in Hoke. Volunteers put in hours to help Hoke schools Information received from the schools in the Hoke County system shows that volunteers have con tributed time and money toward the improvement of education for ail the children in the county. The report shows that 692 volunteers have given 5,997 hours of their time to help in the schools. This is an average of 8.67 hours per person. The dollar value of these hours is $20,089.95 if the minimum hourly wage figure is us ed. In addition to the time, McLean receives Campbell grant Vickie Denise McLean of Raeford has received a Bryan Scholarship from Campbell University in the amount of S800 for four years. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. McLean. While attending Hoke County High School, Vickie was involved in the school French Club, Honor Roll, Marshal, Society of Distinguished High School Students, Student Government Presidnei and Who's Who Among American High School Studetns. She is also a member of Miracle Temple Youth Choir. $14,264.00 have been contributed. The week of May 6-12 was designated as Volunteer Apprecia tion Week. A special volunteer flag will be flown at the Board of Education office during the month of May in recognition of those who have shown a willingness to help improve the Hoke County Educa tional System. Honor society C'hau M. Tran, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Rogers of Raeford has been inducted in the Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society at \orth Carolina State University. Tran maintained a grade point average of better than J. 5 to receive the honor. He is a 1983 graduate of Hoke High School. National Honor Society inducts Arthur Kemp Arthur Kemp of Raeford was among approximately 220 Southern Illinois University Carbondale students who are 1984 inductees to Phi Kappa Phi, na tional scholastic honor society. Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest interdisciplinary I honor society in the United States. Members must have achieved at least junior class standing. Juniors must rank in the top 5% of their class and seniors in the top 10 per cent. Master's and doctoral degree students must have maintained perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Leroy McDuffie reported for duty with 1st Force Jr., son of Leroy and Betty J. Service Support Group Camp McDuffie of Route 1, Raeford has Pendleton, California. DeVry names Weaver to term dean 's list Bob Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Weaver of Raeford, has been named to the Dean's List at the DeVry Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have between a 3.0 and 3.49 grade point average (out of a possible 4.0) for the last term of study. Weaver, a student in the Electronics Engineering Technology program, has a 3.0 GPA. DeVry Institute of Technology is part of the DeVry Inc., network of 11 campuses that speciidize in Elec tronics Technology and Computer Science for Business. DeVry Inc. is one of the largest postsecondary technical education organizations in North America. Wads worth, Townsend honored at Louisburg The offices of the Academic Dean and the Registrar at Louisburg College has released the Dean's List and the Honor Roll List of students who received academic honors for the Spring semester. To be named to the Dean's List a student must attain an average of 4.00 while carrying a minimum of 12 semester hours. Named to the Dean's List were Nadine Tamiko Wadsworth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Wadsworth, Raeford and Robert Glenn Townsend, 111, son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Townsend, Raeford. Area students honored at PSU Eleven area residents were among 158 students who made the Dean's List at Pembroke State University during the spring semester. A grade point average of 3.6 for a minimum of 12 semester hours is required to make the Dean's List. Students hail from 39 cities in North Carolina and five outside the Tar Heel State. Six states are represented on the Dean's List, *nd four students hail from France. Fayetteville leads with 31 students, followed by Lumberton with 25, Pembroke with 13, Laurinburg with 9, Rowland and Red Springs with 7 each, Raeford and Hamlet with 4 each. Sandhills names 10 local students to dean's list These 10 Raeford area students have been placed on the Dean's List at Sandhills Community Col lege for the Spring Quarter of 1984. A student must achieve a grade point average of 3.3 for 12 or more quarter hours attempted and have no grade below "c" to make the list. The students are: Kathleen C. Brazell, Stephen C. Ellis, Alice K. Ellisor, Annie R. Harris, Juanita L. Holland, Diane H. Johnson, Jennifer L. Manning, Emily J. McQueen, Christy A. Nichols and Diane M. Sappen field. Jones honored by UINC-W Susan Ashley Jones of Raeford has been named to the Dean's List at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington for spring semester 1984. To qualify for academic distinc tion at UNCW, students carrying 12 to 14 hours must earn a quality point average of 3.5 or better with no grade lower than a B. Students carrying 15 or more hours must earn a 3.2 average with no grade less than B. Zola completes Academy update Dr. Ramnik Zota of Raeford has completed continuing educa tion requirements to retain active membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, the national association of family doctors.
