Carpenter, a soph more, had a lot of pressure on him. according to Coach Howard Karklev "He started the meet off with seven jumpers ahead of him." Barkle> said. This pressure caused him to "scratch" on his first attempt, said Bsrklev On his second jump. Carpenter appeared to have come to terms with the pressure. He jumped 22 feet and 10 inches to break his o\*n school record. His final jump of the preliminaries proved to be his best with a distance of 23 feet, 10.75 in ches. J.H. Zoo trip planned The Recreation Commission is sponsoring a trip to the N.C. Zoological Park for all interested senior citizens. The date is set for Tuesday, June Sth with the bus departing from the city park ing lot (across from The News-Journal) at 8:IS a.m. Estimated return time is 5:30 p.m. Transportation cost of the trip is $5.00 per person, and is limited to the first 45 paid individuals who register. Entrance fee to the park is as follows: SI.00 for those ages 62-up, and $3.00 for those under age 62. For more informa tion, please call 875-5603. Aerobics For those interested in learning aerobics, the Recreation Department will sponsor a 4 week course beginning June 5. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-8:30 in the J.W. Turlington School Gym. Cost of the session will be $15.00 and a minimum of 20 people are requested. Please call the Recreation Office at 5-4035, or come by the office (Old Na tional Guard Armory Building) to register for the course. Liniment softball league Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsor ing a Men's Liniment League ages 30-up. If you are interested in submitting a team in the league, con tact the Parks and Recreation office at 5-5603. The season is set to start June 4 at Armory Park. The deadline for team entry is Thursday, May 31, 5:00 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation office. Women's Softball League Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsor ing a Women's Softball League ages 14-up. If you are interested in submitting a team in the league, con tact the Parks and Recreation office at 5-5603. The season is set to start June 6 at Armory Park. The deadline for team entry is Monday, June 4, 5:00 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation office. Co-ed volleyball For those interested in a Co-Ed Volleyball League, an organizational meeting will be held on Thursday, June 7 at 7:00 p.m in the Recreation Office. To be eligible players must be a high school graduate and up, or age equivalent. Teams will be limited to 12 members. Competition will involve 3 females and 3 males. Interested teams should send a team representative. If you are interested in playing, but not a member of a team you are encouraged to attend the meeting. Scuba lessons Interested in learning to scuba dive? If you would like to take lessons, please contact the Recreation Office and put your name on the list. If there are enough individuals interested, the Recrea tion Department is willing to sponsor a course. (Details being ar ranged). Call the Recreation Office at 5-5603 for more informa tion.
