. ,-X i-v ? .? * ?? Former Hoke star named head coach at St. Pauls High Former Hoke High three-sport letterman Vann Pennell has been selected as the head football coach at St. Pauls High School. Pennell, was in his fifth year as a top assistant football coach and offensive coordinator at Williamston High School. Pennell is a graduate of Hoke High. He attended Louisburg Junior College for two years and completed his undergraduate studies at East Carolina, where he also received his graduate degree. While at Williamston High School, Pennell coached varsity basketball, wrestling, J.V. basket ball and baseball and served as an aide on the girls' so ft ball team. According to a report in the Sr. Pauls Review, Pennell was the most highly recommended coach who applied for the position at St. Pauls. The list of applicants was narrowed down to three, Pennell having been chosen over the other two. "I've always had an ambition to be a head football coach in a town where athletics played an impor tant role," Pennell told the newspaper. "St. Pauls, is an ideal place for me to begin. The people have been very polite and friendly on ray visits here." Pennell and his wife, Cathy, Vann PtnntU have a four-month-old son, Chad. They plan to move to St. Pauls. The 28-year-old Pennell was a three-sport letterman at Hoke High in 1973. This will be his first head coaching assignment. In 1983, St. Pauls finished with a 5-4-1 record. Pennell will replace Steve Milligan, who resigned for personal reasons. Pittman Grove loses squeaker The -Pittman Grove "Raiders" lost a heart breaker to Lafayette Baptist 7-6. The loss puts the "Raiders" records to 5-1 for the season, and places them in a 3-way tie for first place. Leading hitters for the "Raiders" were: R. Shepley 3-4, J. Madden 2-4, C. Botton 2-3 and E. Ellis 2-3. "Raiders" take on Lake Lynn at Lake Lynn next Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. with both teams Ttghting for first place. A Cultural Arts class will begin at Upchurch Jr. High School, Monday, June 18. A course for exceptional children will begin at Upchurch on June 19 as well as courses in reading, math and science at West Hoke. For more information call 875-4106. Dropping in This parachutist heads for a landing at the Raeford-Hoke County Airport on Monday. Sport jumping is a big activity at the airport, and members of the airport authority are working on a plan that will insure the safety of participants, but which also allow aviation activity to increase. Recreation Bits Swimming lessons The Recreation Department win be offering beginner, advanc ed beginner, and intermediate swimming lessons for all in terested County residents. Betsy Collins will be the instructor and the sessions will be held at 1004 Pulton Street at Mrs. Milo Postel's Pool. Two sessions will be offered, each running a period of two weeks. The first session will begin on Monday, June 18 and will end on Friday, June 29. The second session will begin on Mon day, July 9 and will end on Friday, July 20. Classes for both sessions will be offered as follows: 1-1 :4S p.m. Beginners; 1:45-2:30 Advanced Beginners; 2:30-3:15 In termediate; 3:15-4 p.m. Beginners. Each class will consist of on ly 5 students. For those ages 6-18 the cost will be $20, for those ages 19-up the fee will be $23.00. (Fees include mandatory in surance, instruction and chemical expense). Registration is on a first come, first serve basis on Saturday, June 9 at 10 a.m. in the Recreation Office. (New location - OLD National Guard Ar mory Building). All parents MUST accompany their child. (In surance forms and emergency information needed). Men's softball continues On June 5 action, Boahn Concrete defeated the Raeford Jaycees 12-1. H. Thompson and H. Daniels were 2-3, each with one home run, and O. Mauney hit 2-3 to lead the batting for Boahn Concrete. The Jaycees were led by D. McNeill who hit 2-3, both for home runs, R. Wilcox was 2-3, and K. Rogers 1-3. In the second game, the All Stars defeated 211 Auto Shop 23-5. J. Jones hit 3-3 with one home run, J. Carthens 3-4 with two home runs, and R. Maynor and L. Morrisey were 3-4 with one home run apiece for the leading batters for the All Stars. 21 1 Auto was led by the hitting of J. Monroe 2-3 with one home run, J. Breeden and M. Bratcher were 1-2, and C. Patterson and W. Breeden hit 1-3. In Thursday night's action, the first game saw Hard and Heavy defeat 211 Auto 13-7. R. Leggett hit 4-4, and M. Brown, L. McDonald, and C. McCall each hit 2-4 to lead Hard and Heavy in batting. J. Hasting was 2-3, and R. McLean and C. Baldwin hit 1-3 as the leading batters for 211 Auto. In the last game of the week, the All Stars edged the Jaycees to a 14-9 win. S. Wallace hit 3-4, M. McDougald hit 3-4 with one home run, and B. Easterling, L. Morrisey and R. Maynor each batted 2-4 with all hits being home runs, to lead the All Stars in hitting. The Jaycees were led by C. Crowder and K. Rogers who hit 3-4, T. Caldwell was 2-3, and C. McDuffie hit 2-4. The clinic is open to all youth, ages 12-17 who want to learn the fundamentals of volleyball, or who want to sharpen their current skills. Melissa McGougan will be on hand to conduct the clinic.
