Several weeks ago an item was in
this column about the peach or
chard of Raz Autry. Now Raz has
had this orchard for several years
and he always would tell me he was
going to bring me some peaches. It
seems that just about the time the
peaches were getting ripe
something would appear in the
newspaper that would cause Raz to
not bring me any peaches.
Recently while playing golf he
said for me not to buy any peaches
this year because he would have
plenty and would bring me some.
Of course I smartly replied, "I
hope we don't get mad this year!"
Last Friday night, after going
out for . a shrimp plate at a local
restaurant, we returned home to
find a bag of peaches on the side
steps. There was a note written on
the bag and it was as follows:
"I brought this to Mary Alice
before you made me mad. Raz."
Thanks Raz for the peaches and
I will say that since both of us are
now in retirement, you may have
to bring another bag. I won't make
you mad.

Last week I mentioned about
feeling old when a classmate's
granddaughter graduated. Once
again this is brought to mind when
I found a note on my desk about a
teacher retiring after 30 years.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Thawick
McKeithan of the 71st community
of Cumberland County retired this
year after 30 years of teaching in
Montgomery and Cumberland
Counties.
Maybe many readers of this col
umn didn't remember Lib
Thawick, but she was in high
school (8th grade) the year I
graduated. Her father, the Rev.
Floyd Thawick, was the pastor of
the Raeford Methodist Church
during the early 30's.
Join the club Mary Lib. There is
nothing like it - retirement.

It seems that US 401 has come to
the surface again concerning either
four-lanes or a passing lane be
tween Raeford and Fayetteville. It
would be good to see it come to the
surface sometime other than elec
tion years.

business, some business owners
who purchased containers were
given free service.
No contract existed and the
agreement has expired, Phillips
said.
By adding the new charges, the
city is expected to receive about
$6,740 in revenue.
Rebuilding year
The coming fiscal year will be a
rebuilding year for the city,
Phillips said, noting that funds
have been allocated to rebuild the
municipal capital reserve account.
The account will be built to
about $310,000 and interest earned
on the money has also been
budgeted as revenue, the city
manager said.
Raeford's new budget also in
cludes these items:
?A $37,500 appropriation to be
used at the airport as matching
funds for the construction of a ter
minal.
?The purchase of a new police
car for $10,000. The vehicle will be
used as a replacement for a car
which has more than 80,000 miles
on it.
?The purchase of a pickup
truck for the water department.
The truck is expected to cost
S9.000 and replace a 1961 model.
?The purchase of a chain saw
and other equipment for the fire
department.
?Funds in the capital reserve ac
count for the future purchase of a
fire truck, a street sweeper, a
backhoe, a generator, an air
blower and for downtown
revitalization.
?A budget of an additional
585,150 for the airport, which in
cluded 575,000 for the purchase of
land.
?A contribution of 52,000 to
the Hoke County Library for the
purchase of a microfilm reader
printer.
Council members also voted to
give the Hoke County Children's
Center 51,000 out of the current
budget to go towards the purchase
of a van.
The number of households in
the United Stales will increase an
average of 1 .6 to 1 .7 million a year
during the 1980s, according to the
U.S. Census Bureau projections.

cause of the contamination we
have done the following:
We have flushed the water lines.
Check samples submitted on
