. . .Residents vent tax concerns (Continued from page 1A) The state has offered $75,000 to be matched by the city and county for improvements at the airport, Plummet said. In a recent meeting, the airport authority had discovered that a ter minal building was not the only use for the money. "A taxi way is of the greatest im portance to the airport," Plummer said. Right now, there is no func tional taxiway. Pilots must "backuud" down the actual run way in the face of incoming planes to take off, he said. Plummer asked commissioners to fund their half of the matching money so a taxiway can be built. "The airport is a facility that can five the county a direct return," Plummer said. The airport is often the first im pression an industry will get when checking into Hoke County for possible location areas, he added. Solon contact urged In still a further matter, Balfour told those gathered at the public hearing they need to keep in con tact with legislators in Raleigh. The Legislature is trying to repeal the intangibles tax which could take over $60,000 out of the county's pocket, which would cost two cents in a rate hike to replace with local tax dollars, said Balfour. In other action, commissioners: ?Extended the boundaries of the Hilkrest Fire District. ?Approved payment of $7 SO to last year's county auditors Pittard and Perry. ?Approved payment in an amount over $2,000 for legal fees ending June IS. ?Passed a resolution adding a West Donaldson Street extension. ?Passed an amendment to the 1983-84 county budget. ?Recommended the re appointment of Gerald Wright to Advancement, Inc. . . . State Representative Danny DeVane is trying to set up a meeting between Hoke County Commissioners and State Highway Administrator Billy Rose soon, Balfour said. Balfour told other commis sioners about the plans for the meeting during a session Monday night. ? All commissioners present agreed that it is of prime impor tance for the entire board to attend the meeting. As of Monday: "We are waiting to hear from Representative DeVane," Balfour said. Members of the commission should schedule a meeting with state highway officials, District Highway Commissioner Martha (Bennie) Hollers suggested last week in an interview with The News-Journal. "We plan to pursue that course of action," Balfour said. The board is going to have to take some action, said Balfour. According to Balfour, Commis sioner Hollers will be asked to at tend the meeting with the County Commissioners. Hollers will be the one who will have to do a great deal of work, Balfour said. DeVane is trying to get the meeting set up for next week, he said. "I think it is left up to us," said Commissioner Wyatt Upchurch. If Hoke County lets the highway commission use $200,000 to put shoulders on the side of the road as planned, the county will never get 401 four laned, said Upchurch. "We need to try and get, at least, passing lanes put in between here and Fayetteville, Upchurch said. "We've got a van that will hold 15 people to carry to Raleigh, and I'd like to see it full," Upchurch said. Funds that had been earmarked for use to put shoulders on the road could be used for other pur poses such as passing lanes or other improvements, said Hollers last week. There is a wide belief within Hoke County, among officials and residents that a better, wider road between Raeford and Fayetteville would not only be safer, but better for the growth of the county.
