FMA names honor students Flora Macdonald Academy has completed its sixth six-week period and released the names of the following students in grades 5 through 12 whose cumulative averages placed them on one of the academy's honor rolls. The Head master's Honor Roll requires a minimum average of 9S and students on the F.M.A. Honor Roll maintained averages of 90-94 for the grading period. The Special Roll is composed of students who raised their average at least S points over the preceeding grading period. Upchurch was named Secretary of the Year by the school bosses, and Steed was chosen Boss of the Year by the school secretaries. Upchurch, Steed honored at secretaries' banquet Secretaries in the Hoke County School System were honored by the superintendent, principals and other school administrators during a banquet held at the Raeford Community Center June 12. The banquet is an annual affair that gives the school ad ministrators an opportunity to tell the secretaries they are appreciated and to announce the winner of the secretary of the year. Entertainment for the evening was furnished by the guests. The secretaries gave a comical skit in which they imitated administrators in the school system. They also presented a plaque to Donald D. Steed, who had been selected as Boss of the Year. The climax of the evening was the announcement that Secretary of the Year for 1983-84 was Joy Upchurch, secretary at J.W. McLauchlin School. A plaque was presented to Joy and her name will be added to a plaque that is displayed in the Board of Education office. Tew completes artillery course Pvt. Jerry T. Tew, son of Jerry M. Tew of Raeford, and Linda L. Funk of 168 Oakvale Road, Green* ville. South Carolina, has com pleted the field artillery fire sup port course under the one station unit training (OSUT) program at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. During the course, students were taught to perform as forward observers and to establish field communications for a battery of battalion. OSUT is a program that com bines basic training with advanced individual training. His ~ wife, Cathrine, is the daughter of David and Joyce Hayes of 451 Stonehaven Drive, Lexington, Kentucky. Clark is honored at Wingate College James Anthony Clark, of Rt. 4, Raeford has been named to the Dean's List at Wingate College for the spring semester of 1984. Students must have carried 12 or more hours of academic work, have had no grade below a C, and have made at least a 3.3 grade point average (g.p.a.) to qualify for the Dean's List. A 4.0 g.p.a. is a perfect mark. County students earn UNC degrees Three Hoke County students received degrees during com mencement exercises at the Univer sity of North Carolina at Charlotte on May 12. They were among more than 1,800 UNCC students earning graduate and undergraduate degrees in ceremonies at the Charlotte Coliseum. Dr. James H. Werntz, Jr., vice chancellor for academic affairs, presented the candidates for degrees, and Chancellor E.K. Fretwell Jr. con ferred the degrees. Hoke County students, all of whom are from Raeford, earning degrees are: Darryl McAllister, Scotland Ave., a B.A. in sociology; Jennifer K. Bratcher, Tylertown Loop, a B.A. in biology and Terri M. Organized in the^fall of 1928, Epsilon Pi Eta Honor Society strives to promote character, leadership and scholarship.
