Removing culprit William Gregory, lumber River KMC lineman, removes the chicken snake that plunged over 2.500 rural members of the co-op around the Red Springs area into darkness Saturday from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The snake, in trying to reach a bird nest, crossed a transformer after crawling straight up the utility pole for 25 feet. 4-H'ers to attend Carolina congress Eight 4-H'crs from Hoke Coun ty will be joining other 4-H'ers, leaders, and extension agents from across the state at the 1984 N.C. 4-H Congress in Raleigh July 16-20. The event climaxes another year of 4-H work for the delegates. They will participate in a tight schedule of contests, discussions, workshops, and the election of state 4-H council officers. The congress will be held at N.C. State University's McKim mon Center and the Scott Building at the State Fairgrounds. Delegates will reside in NCSU dormitories. The congress officially opens Monday night with flag ceremony, 4-H Honor Club tap ping, 75th anniversary of 4-H celebration, a concert and dance. On Tuesday some 30 contestants will be held to pick state winners. The winners will be announced at an evening assembly. The state 4-H "entertains" talent show and a dance are scheduled afterwards. An assembly and workshops are set for Wednesday morning and the delegates will have a free after noon. A donor-winner banquet and the 4-H performing arts revue are scheduled Wednesday night. The Thursday program is filled with an assembly, workshops, volunteer leader luncheon, visual newsletter and dance. Attending from Hoke County are Leah Hendrix, Melissa Pratt, Patrick Miller, Troy LaBombard, Junior Johnson, Alvey Miller, Mark Campbell, and Bobby Han cock. Three county youths win at 4-H district Hoke County had three district winners at the 4-H Southeastern District Activity Day held recently near Kins ton. Junior Johnson was declared district winner in junior archery division; Patrick Miller was named district winner in senior archery; and Troy La Bombard was named district winner in bowhunters ar chery division. They arc all members of the Rockfish 4-H Club andd were coached by James Culp, 4-H volunteer leader of the club. They receive a $50 scholarship to N.C. 4-H Congress. Patrick, Junior and Troy will be competing in state demonstration finals at N.C. 4-H Congress July 17. Deaths & Funerals Wllb P. Rodgers Wills Pinkney Rodgers, 79, of Asheboro, a former principal in the Hoke County Schools, died Thursday in Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro, with burial at 3 p.m. at Antioch Presbyterian Church cemetery. He was a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and a longtime ex ecutive of Randolph Mills. He served as past director and secretary of Randolph County Hospital and was a Randolph County Library Board member for many years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Hodgin of An tioch; a son, Wills Pinkney Rodgers, Jr., of Rutherfordton; a daughter, Judith Warrington of Milford, Delaware; three sisters, Inez Ayers of Dallas, Texas, Edna Garren of Greenville, South Carolina, Alice Maxwell of Westminister, South Carolina; two brothers, Howard Rodgers of Greenville, South Carolina, John R. Kitchens Brandon Scott Kitchens, 4 mon ths, died Saturday afternoon at his home on 181 -A Wrightsboro, Fayetteville.
