Hoke Farmers Market
open for business
The new Hoke County Farmers'
Market officially opened for
business Friday, June 29 at 10 a.m.
The market, which is located at
the corner of Harris Avenue and
Bethel Road, is providing fresh
fruits and vegetables Monday
through Saturday from 7 a.m.

The market is coordinated by
the Hoke County Agricultural Ex
tension Service and managed by
Thad Marks.
Local growers will be able to
rent selling space at the market and
refrigerated storage will be provid
ed to ensure the freshness of 411
produce.
Although the opening day got
off to a slow start because most
growers haven't much produce
ready to market yet, it did provide
the opportunity for some enter
prising people to give the new

brought several varieties of;
begonias to sell, and they had;
made several sales in the first hour;
or so at the market.
County extension chairman
Willie Featherstone said that, once
the local crops are producing will,
he expects the new farmers' market
to be a boon to both local growers
and coneumers. He said the loca
tion is convenient and will provide
one-stop vegetable and fruit shop
ping for area residents.
Wally Majekodunmi, an AT&T
State University graduate in
agricultural economics who is serv
ing as a summer intern with the Ex
tension office, has been working
with the farmers who formed the
Hoke County Farmers' Market
Committee.
Majekodunmi said that the local
growers will pay $3 a day to rent
selling space in a mobil marketing
unit which is being furnished by
the Agricultural Extension Pro
gram of AT&T State University.
He said the fees that are collected
will be put in the bank and even
tually used to help establish a per
manent marketing facility for local
growers.
Majekodunmi helped develop
the regulations governing the
operation of the market and has
high hopes that the market will
provide new opportunities for both
growers and sellers.

Parish wins award
as 'Good Neighbor'
There are many ways to be a
good neighbor, but too often a
person's community service goes
unrecognized. Ruth Parish, of the
Medicine Shoppes in Raeford and
444 Owen Drive, in Fayetteville,
was recognized as a "Good
Neighbor" at Medicine Shoppe In
ternational, Inc.'s recent National
Meeting in St. Louis over
Memorial Day Weekend.
Parish was presented with the
"Good Neighbor Award" for
outstanding community service.
Qualifications for the award were
based on performing 10 or more
significant community service pro
grams. Such services include free
health care screenings for colon
rectal cancer, blood pressure,
diabetes, glaucoma and eight other
free screenings, as well as par
ticipation in special programs like
Poison Prevention, blood collec
tion drives, hospice programs, and
Medicine Shoppo's exclusive
"Adopt-A-Family" program.
