Tennis tourney draws 35 teams The Deer Track Invitational Doubles Tournament provided two days of athletic entertainment for about 35 teams last weekend. Team members from Raeford, Red Springs, Lumberton, Rock ingham, Hamlet, Fayetteville, Seven Lakes and even South Boston, Virginia participated in the tournament. In the Men's "A" Doubles classification, Keith Marion, of Seven Lakes, and David Morse, of Rockingham, were winners. Duncan Buoyer and Todd Sumner, both of Raeford, were finalists. Red Springs residents Steve Graham and W.K. Morgan were winners in the Men's "B" Doubles catagory. Home towner Larry Upchurch and Robert Calhoun, of South Boston, Virginia were finalists in Men's "B" Doubles. Doris Goodman and Jill Good man from Rockingham were the winners of the Women's Doubles part of the tournament. Susan Phillips and Joy Up church brought finalists honors home to Raeford. Raeford Jaycees capture region softball tourney The Raeford Jaycees softball team won the Jaycees Greater East Central Region softball tourna ment held in Hope Mills last weekend. Teams competing in the tourna ment were Raeford, Hope Mills, Fayetteville, Sanford, Lumberton and Bladenboro. The first place finish guarantees Raeford a berth in the State Jaycee Playoff held in Sanford August 25 and 26. Raeford rvill be one of 14 teams competing for the State Cham pionship title. Players for the Raeford team are: Steve Sawyer, Chris McDuf fie, Joe Stanton, Charles Crowder, Keith Rogers, Dick McNeill, Eddie Ramsey, Steven Knox, Billy Nor ton, Danny Gibson, Rob Wilcox, Reggie Frahm, John Manning, Ken Cannon and Andy Posey. Walled in Workmen put the finishing touches on the cement wall in turns three and four that complete the replacement of steel guard rails at North Carolina Motor Speedway In Rockingham. The new retaining wall contains 80,000 feet of steel and 700 yards of cement. Footings are presently being poured for a garage area for Sportsman racing teams on the backstretch. All work is scheduled for completion well ahead of the October 21 Warner Hodgdon American 500 race week which In cludes a 300-mile Late Model Sportsman feature on Saturday, Oc tober 20. Dove season to include Thanksgiving Tar Heel sportsmen will have the opportunity to hunt doves over the Thanksgiving holidays this year. This was just one of the actions taken when the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission met on July 16 to set the hunting seasons for doves, rails, gallinules, wood cock and common snipe. In other action, the Wildlife Commission adopted regulations allowing the use of sterile grass carp for aquatic weed control, honored three individuals with resolutions, and adopted a schedule of public hearings for the upcoming waterfowl seasons. This fall's dove season will feature a three-way split. The season will open on September 1 and run through September 29 with hunting allowed from 12-noon through sunset. Hunting will be allowed all day in the second and third portions of the season, which will run from November 17-24 and from December 14 through January 15. S.C. | The season for rails and gallinules will run from September 6 through November 14. The bag limits for gallinules, clapper and king rails is 15 birds daily with 30 in possession and the bag limits for sora and Virginia rails are 25 daily with 25 in posses sion. The woodcock season will run from November 12 through January 15 with a bag limit of 5 daily with 10 in possession. February 26 with a bag limit of 8 daily with 16 in possession. The Wildlife Commission also adopted regulations allowing the use of sterile grass carp to control aquatic weeds ~ such as hydrilla ?under a permit program. Grass carp have been shown to be very effective in controlling aquatic weeds in other states. "These regulations will allow the use of only genetically sterile grass carp . to..* control . .aquatic., weeds," said Richard B. Hamilton, chief of the Division of Inland Fisheries of the N.C. The "Raiders" never could get their offense going. The "Raiders" finished in se cond place with a 13-2 record while LaFayette, retained their title with a 13-1 record. In other action, the "Raiders" won their post season tournament at Pittman Grove by beating Waist one 4-1, LaFayette 5-3, and 9-1. Leading hitters for the tourna ment were R. Shepley 7-12, P.
