Discussing the work

county in 191 1 . She does recall see

nice talking to Mrs. Monroe. She

money.)
Robert Gatlin said that the
records for the county were kept in
the old Kiwanis Club hall in the
Thomas Building before the court

know about this, but he said he
had heard it sometime in his years
in Raeford.

I listened to the Helms-Hunt
debate Sunday night and can't
seem to find anything new that
came forth in the debate. It seems
that the opening remark of Gover
nor Jim Hunt summed up the race.
The people have a choice, a conser
vative or a liberal.
Why debate any more. Take
your pick!

The 23rd Olympics being held in
Los Angeles is causing comments
in Hoke County. Sunday morning
Harold Stone, Leonard Miller and
Earl Gordon were talking about
the feeling they had when the par
ticipants all put on a show on
Saturday night. Wouldn't it be
something if the political leaders of
all the world could join hands like
the young athletes.
On Monday morning Neill
McFadyen said he was so excited
after the cycling race that it took
him awhile to go to sleep.
It was jlso an honor for our .
state for Sam Perkins and Michael
Jordan to be named Co-captains
of the basketball team. Nancy
Hogshead, a swimmer is also from
Duke.
We have many more days and
nights to be thrilled in the Olym

Intersection called 'unsafe'
By Ed Miller
The intersection in front of the
North Raeford Fire Station, where
a fatal automobile crash occurred
last week, is one of the most
dangerous intersections in the
county, a state Highway Patrol
spokesman said.
"I am at a loss as to why," said
Sgt. D.L. Minshew, who is in
charge of the patrol's operation in
Hoke County.
A driver can see for a half a mile
in every direction, Minshew said.
Perhaps drivers just are not
careful enough when they come to
an intersection that has a clear
view in every direction, he said,
adding that maybe they do not
look carefully.
There is not much heavy traffic
at the intersection except when
Burlington Mills changes shifts,
and not enough traffic for a light,
Minshew said.
That intersection averages about
one accident per month, Minshew
said, noting that when there is a
wreck there, injuries ususally oc
cur.
"I have suggested to (Raeford)
Police Chief Wiggins that a we put
a teardrop island with a stop sign
there," he said.
The intersection is just inside the
city limits.
The "teardrop" will put the stop
sign right in the middle of the road
and not on the shoulder where it
might be missed, said the sergeant.

In many cases at that intersec
tion the victim will have stopped
and apparently not noticed the on
coming vehicle, he said.
A wreck at that intersection be
tween a truck and a small car
resulted in the death of a nine
year-old girl and the injury of two
other family members last Mon
day.
According to Wiggins, the driver
of the car stopped at the sign and
then pulled into the path of the
truck.
