Even after the rain For weeks this crepe, myrtle had been rained upon but the tree still blooms and smells great. The smell of the tree must have travelled a good distance because there were bees all around it. Though great in numbers, the bees posed no threat to anyone who wanted to stop for a minute and " smell the flowers. " Raeford students participate in writing workshop Two Raeford residents are among the 91 Peace College freshmen who are getting a two week head start on college. The Raeford residents taking part in the Institute are Carmen Fowler, daughter of Mrs. Earl N. Fowler of Harris Avenue,; and Laura Benton McLeod, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James B. McLeod of N. Main Street. The students are taking part in the Peace College Summer Writing Institute July 29 through Aug. 11. The intensive workshop is one of Peace College's efforts to address a nationwide problem-the lack of preparedness for college level writing and thinking among many young people. In its third year, Peace's volun tary institute has attracted more students each year. This year's group represents more than 40 percent of Peace's freshman class. ? The workshop is for students of all levels of writing ability. Their comman goal is to improve their writing and thinking skills to give them the best chance for successful college work, according to Dr. Sal ly Buckner, director of the In stitute. By the end of the 13-day, camp like experience, the students will have written at least 8,000 words and earned two college credit hours. They will have written about their own experiences and from their reading. And they will have used such formats as essays, journal entries and letters. They will also have studied grammar, critiqued their own and each other's work, toured the Raleigh area and met with professional writers. Peace's lnsititute is only the se cond of its kind in the nation, ac cording to Dr. Buckner. The only similar one she knows was begun at Bard College in Annandale-on Hudson, N.Y. in 1981. Bard re quires all of its freshman to attend that workshop prior to fall semester. The success of the Peace In stitute shows up in the increasing numbers of students who choose to enroll each year (from 77 to 1982 to 92 this year.) Parakeet behaved stoically until the day of his demise DEAR DOCTOR: Recently my parakeet died after only being sick for a day or so. What could have killed him so quickly? The day he died he sat on the floor of the cage and fluffed up his feathers. He seemed to be eating right up to the last day, too. ANSWER: While I can't say what might have caused your bird to die, I can guess that it was sick much longer than you imagined. In the wild, birds that show any ab normal behavior are singled out by predators for supper. The instinct of the bird, therefore, is to behave as normal until they have used up all their reserve energy and are quite ill. This trait makes it doubly impor tant for you to seek care for your caged birds as soon as you notice Raeford Kindergarten and Day Nursery Fall Term Begins SEPTEMBER 4, 1984 Call 875-2332 Kindergarten Curriculum ?Writing ?Counting ?Pre-reading / ?Pre-math ?Art ? Some are larger and some look to be her baby teeth. Will they take care of themselves or will I have to have them pulled by my veterinarian? ANSWER: Your dog needs to have her teeth examined very soon. The baby tooth and the adult tooth that is replacing it should not be in the mouth at the same time. If the baby tooth remains, it will cause the other tooth or teeth to be crowded and often misaligned. The roots of the baby teeth are normally re-absotbed as the pressure of the advancing adult teeth comes from up below. If the tooth is not loosened, the adult tooth has to erupt to one side of the existing tooth. Early removal of the teeth that are retained will help your pet to have a normal bite. Retention of the teeth encourages tarter ac cumulation, gum irritation and in fection. Don't wait to see if the problem takes care of itself. Get help early in this case.
