^ wmamm School News Almost a parade In hopes of promoting a better high school band for Hoke County, there was a band camp that ran from August 6-10 and August IS and 14. Here, the flag squad practices their moves. Everyone in the band looked to be working real hard in the 90? weather. To raise funds for the Hoke High Band, there will be a concert /carnival at J. W. Turlington Auditorium on Saturday, September 8 beginning at 8 p.m. The concert features local band Strait Way and a high school aged band named Vizion. Tickets are S3. Construction to start soon on Flora Macdonald repairs By Ed Miller Work on rebuilding the storm torn Flora Macdonald Academy could begin soon as school of ficials anticipate having a $200,000 state emergency grant in hand this week. "We have had word from the state that we will get the money," Headmaster Eugene McKethan said. The money from the state will be used to match $200,000 paid by the insurance company covering the building to fund the reconstruc tion. While the renovations on the buildings will not be completed un til around March or April, the school will operate this year out of mobile classrooms funded by the Federal Emergency. Management Act (FEMA), McKethan said. The mobile classes are to be in stalled by September 4, the head master said. Workers are on campus now repairing the dome area of the school and replacing a temporary roof that was put there to protect the inside after a tornado tore the original roof almost completely from the building. A contract has been awarded for the replanting of the campus grounds with the $20-25,000 cost of the repairs being funded by FEMA, McKethan said adding that a grant application for the rebuilding of the gardens has also been made. There has been no final approval of the gardens grant. "The next phase in getting ready for this school year will be to move furniture from the old building in to the mobile units," McKethan said. Because of the tardiness of get ting the mobile classrooms, the opening of the school has been delayed from August 27 to Sepember 10. i, According to the Headmaster, even with the delay in beginning classes, the school should end on schedule because Flora Macdonald is a private academy and no state teachers' meetings have been put into the schedule as in public schools. ' The Board of Trustees at the school had the option of using the churches that housed students last year instead of delaying the open ing date of the school but board members, feeling it to be unecessary to move twice in one month, voted to move the opening date, McKethan said. Daycare school studies health Mrs. Scrivcn, staff and students at Child's Play Day Care Center dedicated the month of August to Health Awareness. The objective of this project was to teach good health prac tices in areas of nutrition, den tal health, physical fitness, good grooming, first aid and safety. Child's Play received support in this project from Rebecca Smith (Health Educator) and other members of the Hoke County Health Department. who correlated a tour of the Health Department especially for the children. At the Health Department the nutritionist discussed healthy snacks and provided samples for the children to eat. A nurse discussed doctor visits, followed by a lesson in dental hygiene. So far the project has proved such a success that the staff at Child's Play Day Care Center in tends to incooperate a health month into their curriculum at least on an annual basis. Rebecca Smith and Pamela Foster (nutritionist) stated that this was the first time that the Health Department had par ticipated in such a project with Day Care students. They felt that it was such a good idea that they are* considering in viting other Day Care Centers in Hoke County, they said. In addition to daily discus sions on the health topics a trip to a safety exhibit at Cross Creek Mall was also included in the Child's Play Health Awareness Program.
