. . . Around Town continued (Continued from page 1A) The items last week about the Antioch school building and when it closed brought forth two dif ferent dates. Howard Hendrix was by the office last week and left me a note saying that the school closed about 1940. He said he was too young to go to school, but could remember going there with his brother and sisters to visit. Last Saturday afternoon Mrs. Carlton Niven, nee Hazel Gentry, called and said that she attended Antioch in 1934 and that it closed that year and she went to school in Raeford in 193S. I ran into W.J. Coates, who in the 1930s was the principal at Mildouson and asked if he could recall the date of the closing of An tioch. He said that he couldn't remember the date, but that he was transferred to the Raeford Graded School in 1936. I do know that 1933 was the last year that the local high school was Raeford High School. The next year 1935-1936, the new Hoke County High School opened in what is now J.W. Turlington School. This was the first year that K.A. Mac Donald was superinten dent. W.P. Haw field left after the school year ended in 193S. Some said at that time he left because of the pressure on him for closing schools in the county or in school terms would be, consolidation. If anyone can give the correct answer to this, please call the of fice and leave your information. ? * ? While on the subject of Antioch School, H.L. McMinis brought a picture into the office of the 6-7 grades of that school in 1932. It is being printed elsewhere in the paper. It was kept right because the names of the students are listed on the back of the pictures. Thanks H.L. for the picture. ? ? * I attended the Memorial Service last Sunday afternoon at Shiloh Presbyterian Church for W. Lester Seals who was buried recently in Austin, Texas. The Rev. George R. Cheney, Jr. former pastor of the church was in charge of the ser vice. The Rev. Mr. Cheney is now retired and lives in Laurinburg. He told me before the service that he read The News-Journal every week and was still interested in the people and events of the county. He was really interested in the stories about Sandhills Com munity College putting a campus in Hoke County. He said that it would certainly be an asset for this county in many ways. The preacher said that the price for get ting people educated was never too high. It was nice to talk to him again after a few years. Mrs. Cheney was also at the ser vice and she said that she still had a love for Hoke County. ? * * Have you picked another team to root for in the Western Division of the National League? It seems to me that the Atlanta Braves have about had it for this year. At this writing they are 1 1 V \ games out of first place and they have about 30 more games to play. It doesn't look good. Anyway, if you don't want to pick a baseball team, just turn on your TV this weekend because you can start looking at college foot ball. Then on Sunday the National Football League opens. How time flies! * * * Politics is still on the menu. Congressman Bill Hefner was in town last week and it seems that he would like to have all the Democrat votes he can get in Hoke County. He came to Raeford from Fayet teville and said he could under stand now why we needed four lanes. Enough said. ? * * Robert Gatlin brought these figures to the office on Tuesday morning. 5 Days High A Low Temperature Comparisons 1983-1984 at Raeford, N.C. I9g3 19S4 Aug.
