Daniels is holding a prize conquest ~ a five-foot, four-inch rattlesnake. The serpent was actually killed by his mother, Margret Daniels who quickly found that the creature could not be killed with a 16 gauge shotgun. She shot at it, and the shot would not penetrate so she cut the head off with a garden hoe. The big snake had obviously been around for quite some time as he sported 18 rattles and a button on his tail. Rattlers grow a button each time they shed their skin. When the skin is shed again, the button turns into a rattle. Although large snakes tend to' shed more than smaller ones, they usually lose their skin about once or twice per year depending on eating habits and growth rate. Hoke Farm Bureau committee meeting with state members Members of Farm Bureau com modity advisory committees in Hoke County and from throughout North Carolina will meet in Raleigh on September 7 to begin the organization's "policy development process." According to W.W. Cameron, Jr., president of the Hoke County Farm Bureau, representatives in 1 1 commodity areas will meet for the purpose of pinpointing some of the issues and problems that farmers will be facing in farm commodities during 1985 and future years. Also meeting will be committees on natural and economic resources, and law and order. Representing the Hoke County Farm Bureau at the meeting will be James N. Maxwell Jr., Cotton, Charlie Pendergrass, Tobacco, L.E. McLaughlin Jr., Livestock and N.L. McFadyen, Forestry. After issues are raised and discussed by commodity commit tees, they are submitted to the in dividual counties for consideration by resolution committees prior to the county annual meetings. Cameron said the Raleigh meeting will be held at the North Carolina Farm Bureau building on Glenwood Avenue and will begin , at 10 a.m. * All committees will meet jointly ; for a report on the current ; agricultural situation and general ; problems areas that will be con fronting agriculture in the future. Committees will later begin in-; dividual discussions. Cameron suggested that Farm Bureau members who have ques tions that need to be considered, or ideas that may resolve current problems, bring them to the atten tion of local committee members. Flu shots being offered to ' high risk' residents Doctors and Clinics in Hoke County and throughout North Carolina will soon be administer ing a protective flu vaccine to thousands of "high risk" in dividuals - those 65 and over, and those of any age with certain medical conditions. There are many persons in North Carolina in the high risk category who will be especially vulnerable to complications from a flu attack. Some of the medical conditions in the high risk group are chronic heart disease, bronchitis, tuber culosis, emphysema, kidney disease, diabetes and chronic anemia. Anyone with one of these medical conditions should consult his family doctor as to the need of the flu shot. The shots can be obtained from a family doctor or from the Hoke County Health Center. The Health Center will offer the flu shots beginning in October on Mondays from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. until 1 1 a.m. There will be a S3 charge for the shot. The shot will be given by the Health Center for approximately six weeks or until the vaccine runs out. Health Center .officials urye anyone needing a flu vaccine to come early because of the limited supply.
