Auto stolen from ill man A Pinehurst man lost his car after he became ill and could not retrieve it from a Hoke County roadside. Andrew James Dezam apparent ly left his 1963 Corvair on the side of a road in the Ashley Heights area of the county on July 20 after it broke down, sheriffs reports say. According to a spokesperson in the sheriffs department, the man then was taken ill and did not return to see about his vehicle until August 12. The vehicle was missing, reports say. Dezam listed the vehicle as being worth $3,800, reports say. In other crime, there were two breaking and entering reports in the county last week and two more in the city. Alberta Cox reported to police the theft of a vacuum cleaner from her house. Last Sunday, at about 4:42 p.m., her house was entered and the cleaner taken, reports say. The vacuum cleaner was valued at $400, reports say. A reluctant farewell With a drop-in last Thursday, friends and associates said goodbye to James Martin, Hoke County Manager for the past six years. The drop-in was highlighted when Martin was presented with a new microwave oven and a plaque commending his service to the county. The man was also ordered by the court to stay away from Duddey, according to court records. Two years supervised probation and a $300 fine were given to another Raeford resident last week as he appeared in court on charges of driving with his license revoked. Wilbur Thadcus Marks, 26, was arrested on August 3 on the charges, records say. In another case, David Lee Freeman was also in court pending charges of driving with his license revoked. Although the rate increased, the Figures also show that 60 more county residents were working than the previous month. The reasons for the increase have been tied to temporary in dustry layoffs, an increased labor force and wet weather. Hoke County was one of the 22 counties in the state which showed double digit rates. During July, the rate rose from 9.2V# recorded in June to the 10% mark, and 80 county residents joined the jobless ranks. In June there were 780 workers unemployed out of a labor force of 8,300. July's figures show that the work force increased by 140 and 860 workers were jobless. July's figures also showed that Fayetteville showed a slight in crease from 7.2% to 7.5%, Moore County rose from 6.6% to 6.9% , Scotland County went from 9.1% to 9.3% and Robeson County went from 9.6 to 10.2%. . . . College office OK'd (Continued from page 1A) Some commissioners are saying privately that the candidates are strong and one is likely to be of fered the manager's position. College room OK'd In other action during Tuesday morning's meeting, the commis sioners approved giving Sandhills Community College a recently vacated office as an addition to the school's space being used in the Old County Office Building on Elwood Avenue. The office will allow students to enter and exit the classroom area and find teachers without having to walk through and disrupt a class. On other business, the commis sioners took action on these mat ters: ?Went into an hour-long ex ecutive session to discuss personnel matters. ?Received for information a memorandum concerning research on the upgrading of handicapped facilities in the Hoke County Courthouse saying that the county is probably going to have to put an elevator in the building. The com mission has been looking into in stalling a wheelchair lift to transport handicapped persons to the court room, but that plan is not in keeping with laws governing county buildings, the memo said. ?Approved the sending of an application for a road to be added to the state system in the county to the State Highway Commission. Received for information a letter from Sandhills Community Col lege President Raymond Stone say ing that he will work up a projec tion as to how much space is need ed for a satellite campus in Hoke County. He will also work on pro jections of costs, the letter says. ?Authorized a purchase order to get a new ambulance to replace one that was wrecked last week. ?Were introduced to the coun ty's new Assistant Extension-4-H agent Sandra Ross, who was presented to the commission by Extension Chairman Willie Featherstone.
