New services Thanks to two new " earth stations" or satellite dishes, Alert Cablevi sior. will soon be offering expanded service to Raeford. Although the line-up for the expanded service has not been fully decided, the cable service will also be offering The Playboy Channel and The Movie Channel as optional premium programming. Also offered with the new service will be options for wired and wireless remote control units. Here, Alert Cablevision General Manager Harrison Daniels checks out the system 's two new dishes. Library hours changed for fall By Elizabeth Barges* Library hours have changed for the fall, winter, and sprint seasons. The new hours are as follows: Monday - 8:30 - 5:30 Tuesday - 8:30 - 8:00 Wednesday - 8:30 - 5:30 Thursday - 8:30 - 8:00 Friday -8:00-4:00 Saturday - 8:30 - 12:30 It is hoped that opening two nights will encourage many to use the library more for research and study. Students are invited to come and allow the library staff to assist with homework assignments and reports. We also hope to continue to see families use the library dur ing the evening hours as they did during the summer. .If you are interested in using the conference room, history room, or any other space in the library for a meeting, please call the library to reserve a time and day. The calendar is getting full, and we want to offer the rooms to the community to use at their conve nience. Mrs. Betsy McNeill will be resuming the story hours in the library and in the schools September 17. She coordinates her schedule with the schools, day care centers, and headstart programs in the county. She also does special request children's programs as her schedule permits. Once again we thank Betty Gill for her display in the library. Her crafts are beautiful and we are delighted to share them with the community. Anyone having special items that they would care . to display in the library, please contact the library. We would love to have your items, and we know the library patrons would enjoy seeing them. Ms. Llde has worked at the local facility for over 12 years in the Maintenance Department. Llde was honored on this special oc casion by Plant Manager and presented with a Bible. Literacy group gives accolades during celebration held Sunday Hoke Reading/Literacy Council honored Bobby Peterkin as "Stu dent of the Year", Anna Jordan as "Tutor of the Year" and the Cen tral Office Staff of Hoke Board of Education received the 1984 Ap preciation Award. Certificates of Appreciation were also given to Senator David Parnell, Representatives Danny DeVane, John Hasty and Sidney Locks for their successful efforts in obtaining funds for the local council from the "Pork Barrel." The celebration was held at McLauchlin Chapel Church on Sunday where representative Locks was the guest speaker. In speaking Locks shared his personal experiences as a Laubach Tutor and encouraged support say ing that "every nickle given to literacy is well worth it." "Hoke County nor North Carolina is unique in the problems of illiteracy" Locks said. "But it is a solvable problem." Hoke Reading/Literacy Coun cil's chairman. Ken Witherspoon said while it was possible that many attended the celebration to hear Representative Locks, he believes that awareness is bringing about involvement. "$ for Literacy" chairman, Nellie Flowers attested to the latter part of Witherspoon's statement and reported $1398.28 for the re cent drive. Mrs. Flowers said that a few canvessers had not reported, but felt when all funds were in the drive would go over $1,500. " Reading tutor workshop rescheduled The Hoke Reading/Literacy Council's workshop has been changed to September 17 (6 p.m.- 10 p.m.), September 24 and October 1 (6 p.m. -9 p.m.) Those interested in tutoring adults should contact Barbara Buie at 875-2145. The 10-hour training course will be held at the council's office on West Elwood Avenue. Those interested are requested to sign up by Monday to help il literate adults learn the basic skills for everyday living. Rep. DeVane appointed to study air ambulance system Representative Daniel H. DeVane of Hoke County was ap pointed recently by House Speaker Liston B. Ramsey to a special com mission to evaluate proposals for establishing an air ambulance system in North Carolina. The group will study the need and feasibility of a Statewide air ambulance service and report its findings to the General Assembly. POSITION AVAILABLE: Health Director (Local Health Administrator I) LOCATION: Hoke County Health Department. Raeford, NC SALARY RANGE: $20,644 - $27,530 CLOSING DATE: October 1. 1984 DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Serves as the director of a small health department in a rural county with a staff of 19 and a budget of $400,000. Duties include program planning, development and im plementation: budget development and implementation; and monitoring of standards. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A Masters decree in Public Health Ad ministration from a two-year program and one year of experience in administrative management, or a Masters decree in any area of public health and two years of administrative management ex perience. one of which must be in a health related field: or a Masters decree in public administra tion in any health related field and two years of administrative management experience in a health related program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Hoke County requires residency of Department Heads with salary in excess of $15,000. Individuals must complete move within 12 months of appointment.
