Opinions wow DID rr HAPPEN IfoAT IN AMERICA ITS NOW CONSIDERED A CRIME TO BE A LIBERAL? " Season for fulminations could bring weak humor With the political conventions behind us, the battle of the can didates is now in full swing. For the next two months we will be treated to the fulminations, and posturings of political orators as . they bravely-slog through verbal ' swamplands in search of an original thought. As usual, humor (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) will be a standard part of the political repertory. Regrettably, our current crop of politicians aren't very good at it. Probably the keenest wit on the ^ political scene in recent years was Lucien Coleman Things That Matter John F. Kennedy. He had a rare gift for impromptu humor, as well as for the carefully planned joke. For instance, when a little boy ask ed him, on one occasion, "Mr. President, how did you become a war hero?", Kennedy replied, "It was absolutely involuntary. They sank my boat." Winston Churchill was another politician with a sharp wit. One day, during a parliamentary recess, Churchill is said to have tarried too long at a local tavern. On his way back to Parliament, he was ac costed by an acrimonious female, a long-time political opponent. "How disgusting," she said, reprovingly, "you, sir are drunk." "And you, madam, are ugly," Churchill replied, "but the dif ference between us is that I shall be sober come tomorrow." Which brings us back to the rhetorical boondoggling on the current political scene. VOTE NOVEMBER 6 Shirley T. ,r . GIBSON Hoke County Board of Education P?id for by ?uppon?T< of Shirley T.
