Car thieves hit county By Ed Milter . Two vehicles were reported stolen last week in Hoke county, law enforcement authorities said. Joseph Roy Acam reported to sheriffs deputies that he left his home around 10 a.m. Sunday mor ning only to return to find a securi ty chaio down, that his house had been entered and his car missing. Reportedly missing from inside the house was a .22 calibre gun worth about $50 and a portable black and white television set valued at $189. There was also $30 in cash miss ing from the house, reports say. Outside the house, Acarn's Chevrolet El Camino truck was missing. The truck was valued at $4,400, reports say. The sheriff's department is in vestigating the alleged thefts. Raeford Police recovered a car that was reported stolen the previous day, said Police Chief Leonard Wiggins. King David Purcell was working at The House of Raeford last Fri day when his car was allegedly taken from the parking lot. Purcell reported the car stolen that day, Wiggins said. The 1977 Lincoln Continental was found the next day at one of the city's wells at about 8:33 a.m., Wiggins said. The car had been vandalized, said Wiggins. Valued at about $4,000, the car had about $2,000 in damage done to it, said the chief. There were two other break-ins where belongings were taken in the county last week, according to sheriffs reports. Irene Currie reported that her home was broken into sometime before September 21. Drapes, pillow cases, china, silverware and bedroom ac cessories in an unknown amount were taken, reports say. The investigation into this breaking and entering is continu ing, the report says. Upchurch Jr. High School reported a break-in at their foot ball team's locker room. Apparently, thieves went through the clothing of team members and took money. There were two witnesses to the crime, reports say. The Sheriff's Department is looking into the matter. A warrant has been issued for a man who cashed an allegedly forg ed check at Raeford's Jiffy Stop number 2. On September 11, Ronnie Huff man went into the store and cashed a check from Mary Armstrong say ing it was for gas. As soon as the check was cash ed, the man left, reports say. Armstrong was contacted about the matter but said that she has not had an account with the bank the check was drawn on for about four years, say reports. On September 19, the check was returned and a warrant was issued for 18-year-old Huffman. The Raeford resident was served with the warrant but not jailed, a spokesperson for the department said. Ivan Bernardo Ochoa reported that someone shot into his car, ap parently when he was close by. Whoever did the shooting used a handgun and was driving a white Lincoln Continental. Ochoa could not get a tag number from the car, reports say. Personnel from Jimmy's Exxon reported a larceny from that store, but no-evidence of a break-in could be found, reports say. According to reports, $86.23 was left in the cash register to make change with but that money was missing the next morning upon opening. Easter ling Auto Sales reported the theft of a stereo from one of its cars. The stereo was valued at $300, according to reports. Farmers Home Administration reported the breaking, entering and vandalism of one of their houses in the Rockflsh area. Someone went into the house and broke two screen doors and tore up walls in the hall and two rooms of the house, reports say. The damage was reported at $880. Raeford Police reports say that a unique bicycle was reported stolen last Monday. Scott Poole reported that his bike was taken out of his back yard. The bike was valued at $400 and there is not another one like it in the county, Wiggins was told by the owner. Pope's VarietyStore was broken into last Sunday as a brave thief broke the plate glass window out of the front of the store and took a ladies jacket and some pillow cases. The merchandise taken was worth about $31 but there was $300 damage done to the window,, reports say. Mary Watson, who works at the Laundry Mat on West Prospect Avenue, reported that she was in charge of the business when some one took about $70 in quarters from a box she used to make change out of. w On tour Robin Thompkins (seated at machine) shows a group of first graders how her computer works. Shooting bill OKyd In other action, approval was given to a bill which will be in troduced in the state Legislature by Representative Daniel H. DeVane to prohibit the use in Hoke County of rifles, larger than .22 calibre, except in deer stands. The bill will say that hunting with a rifle with a bore larger than .22 calibre will be prohibited in Hoke County unless the hunter is in a stand 10-feet off the ground. According to DeVane, there is some opposition to the bill but "not that much." The bill comes at the request of county residents who live in sec tions of the county where deer hunting is often practiced. The land is very flat for big bore rifle hunting, DeVane said. Moore County has a similar law in effect now, said DeVane. If passed into law, the bill sets up a fine of $50 and a 30-day jail term for violators. The act will not go into effect until October 1, 1985, if passed, DeVane said.
